The posts regarding paying for college that come up around this time of year. Students with parents who won’t be able to contribute anything for college but assume that all costs will be covered with loans, scholarships, and grants especially for an out of state public school which is their dream school. When other posters try to explain why these schools may not be a suitable option for them they are not willing to listen to this advice. They wrongly assume they can take a 6 figure loan amount and claim in state residency after the first year. Oh, and they will easily find $10,000 in outside scholarships a year to reduce costs. Not so much annoying but sad.
One in which a poster wants validation that taking 12 AP classes his senior year is a great strategy for getting into a top college, and would make an excellent application essay. The icing is that he’s doing it to be an inspiration to his fellow HS classmates. @-)
Ones where students debate “how bad is it” that they didn’t send all scores to colleges that clearly require all scores to be sent and “is there any way for them to find out?”
In general, any thread that asks “is there a way for them to find out?”
All the folks who think ED/EDII is merely a suggestion.
Ones where instate posters complain that the only reason that their student was not accepted to an instate school is because the schools are cash grabbers who want the extra money from OOS residents. Without seeing the stats of all of the applicants , one doesn’t really have the info to make such an assumption.
Also ones where no matter how many times it has been stated that acceptance is based on stats and that ECs are not weighed in the decision , they feel the need to list every EC and job that their student has ever engaged in to justify why they should’ve been accepted over a student with higher stats.
Ones where posters ask for suggestions (like schools similar to XXXX) and then when suggestions are given, discount/reject them. Good heavens, just be polite and say thanks. Even if you don’t like the suggestions.
The ones where there is very obviously a long “results” or “acceptances” thread and someone starts a new one. Moderators, is there anyway to merge these different threads?
Also, under some schools (ex. UCLA, UCB) the “Class of 2020” results are pinned at the top. Is there anyway to unpin last year’s results? UCSD has 2019 results pinned at the top.
Yes, it is possible. Please click on “Flag” beneath a post in the thread and report it. That way, we’ll know to merge, unpin, etc. We rely on members’ reports because we can’t look at hundreds of forums consistently. Thanks!
“Featured Threads” that don’t actually have anyone posting on them (and were never particularly interesting.)
@PNWedwonk, if you see any featured threads that haven’t been posted in for more than a month or so, please flag the original post and we will unfeature it. Thanks!
These have been unpinned.
This year, a whole lotta, “Does this mean I’m accepted?” I almost imagine, “They said no, does it mean I still have a chance?”
Otoh, decades ago, my brother got one of those confusing welcome letters, before decisions were out.
The ones where an OP ignores all the helpful feedback and responds, in 10 words or less, to the one post, more than 20 or so posts back, that agrees with their position (and seems throughout the thread to have selectively responded, briefly, to comments in posts that agree with their position). If they really only want to whine or vent, use the vent thread. Dont waste posters’ time asking for feedback if you really don’t want it or have the courtesy to acknowledge it.
Some already this year but many more next month regarding appealing their admission decision. Their appeal consists of “Please review my application again, I really want to go to your school”.
Posts where the OP admits doing something in one post and then later denies doing it even though many of her statements line up with her original statement. Then OP leaves because the majority of posters don’t give her the validation she is looking.
And then posts that people are “stalking” when they look up past posts.
Related to @3scoutsmom’s topic, those where the OP admits to academic dishonesty, but only wants answers to “How do I get out of this with absolutely no repercussions whatsoever?” rather than “How do I learn from this like a grown-up, even if it means taking some lumps?”
Threads that are resurrected after a year or more by someone other than the OP returning with an update are annoying. (I like updates). I don’t like old threads that people comment on because they want to tear down a school. And the ones with similar questions aren’t helpful. It’s too easy for people to get caught up in details of the OP, and it’s frustrating to discover several pages in that the OP probably no longer cares and the new poster’s situation is only vaguely similar.
Threads from perfect SAT students that feel the need to add “1st sitting” because they don’t want to be lumped in with the “2nd sitting” plebs.
