Oh, I got into Harvard, Yale, Princeton, WashU, Vandy, Georgetown, Stanford, MIT, Amherst but waitlisted by Columbia, UPenn… why?.. why these guys WL me?.. and BTW I was rejected by NYU, BU, Tufts, UMich… how dare them… and also… which schools should I go… Harvard or Stanford. And yes, I got in with average grades, not so special ECs, don’t let the people on CC tell you not to apply to these schools because you are average. Ha!
Then there are the endless complaints on fianancial aid… this is not fair, that is not accurate. Get over it, resource is limited.
I find it annoying in general when ppl are bad mouthing a U for not providing “enough” aid, or too much of it is work study. Or it’s not enough for me to go abroad… Some people seem to think it should all be free, and and are downright incredulous that it is not!
Life is not free folks!
I admit that I don’t see the threads people are complaining about, but I think it is perfectly reasonable for a person to visit, say Columbia, and report that it was TOO urban for their kid. (As opposed to other urban schools.) I also think that it is perfectly reasonable for someone to visit a Catholic or other religious school and report back that it is TOO much so for their kid. (Especially since some people ALWAYS assure those who question in advance that of course people of any religious background, including atheists, are perfectly comfortable at those schools.)
Congratulations to those who know these things in advance. Not everyone is omniscient.
While I do not disagree, I still SMH over a user who posted that a Catholic college had too many crucifixes.
Yes, and that was probably me last year! The crucifixes on top of every building at one college we visisted had a very different vibe/feel over many other Catholic colleges that did not. You can’t say they give off the same vibe. That may not matter to you, but it may matter to some as @Consolation indicated that it may be TOO much for a particular student.
I agree that it is perfectly appropriate for posters to report that a school was “too urban” or “too religious” for their particular comfort level, but often it’s how something is said and not what is said that is annoying IMO.
The ones in which posters reveal what they expect of their own spouse (no weight gain with age) and what they can excuse in other people’s marriage (infidelity because of a spouse’s weight gain), and you find their world view really depressing.
I’m tired of reading the posts written by the same parent CC posters (one of whom doesn’t even have kids yet but is posting here like it’s his day job), over and over again, that rank the top universities on a micro-scale, like for instance this post:

I actually think this thread is the most annoying thread I have ever read on CC. Soo much complaining.
@skieurope, the crucifix thing depends on the context. For example, several years ago BC changed its policy and installed a crucifix in every classroom. Now, obviously they are fully within their rights to do so. But at the time, there were professors and students there who had not signed on for that kind of religious environment, and some of them were distinctly unhappy. I don’t blame them.
IMO if a person attends a school with a religious affiliation , they should go into knowing that at any time those aspects may change. If they aren’t comfortable with that possibilty , then maybe they should choose another option.
Apparently so. Let’s all remember that the next time someone is extolling Notre Dame, for example, for their friendliness to people of all religions (or none).
@Consolation If people make a decision as important as what school to attend based on what someone says without investigating for themselves , then they have bigger issues than visible crucifixes . It’s amazing how much someone is willing to overlook when prestige is involved . Nothing is guaranteed at any school. The same people that are offended by it were probably not offended by any aid provided by that institution.
Responses that are very long and start to seem like an essay. I try to skim and go to the next response.
^ Ha. If it’s too hard to get the point, it’s just too hard. Not naming names. I’d add, when the poster gives numerous examples. It’s just a forum, ya know.
Any thread comparing colleges that’s hijacked by someone who is either a high school fanboy pretending to be a student at a particular college or a loud obsessive who it was a mistake for that college to admit.
The kids on the White House internship thread who are wondering why they haven’t heard back after the usual date. I so want to suggest a reason why that might be, but I am trying really had not to click “Post Comment” on my draft response.
@carolinamom2boys and @TomSrOfBoston We were specifically talking about situations where the school in question CHANGED their policy. That is not something that is going to be mitigated by advance research.
However, at this point I think your POV is clear: anything goes when it comes to religious–and particularly Catholic --schools’ policies regarding religious policies and requirements, and if it changes in a way that you find personally over the line after you enroll, tough luck, that is what you get for enrolling in a school with a religious affiliation in the first place.
The takeaway to me is: forget about all the protestations of ecumenical atmosphere. Stay away unless you are an adherent of that faith.
@Consolation Again, if a student is offended by a crucifix s/he should definitely stay away from Catholic college.
