I should say that if a post has a bunch of errors, I will point that out. That’s different than criticizing one word or phrase.
Purpose of language is to communicate. If what someone wrote does that, I am good. Though as the number of errors increases, that becomes less likely.
Any thread that responds to a chance me with “You have a great chance at HYPSM!!” Usually written by a high school senior.
I will say that MaineLonghorn is more gracious than I am. When I find a new thread with numerous grammatical errors, I delete it and tell the poster to try again. Unless the text is chock full of internet acronyms; then I delete it and warn. >:)
If the user can’t take the time to make the post readable to users from whom s/he wants help, then I’m not not taking the time to edit the post.
Do not encur the rath of the modoraters! Oops!
I think your best odds are looking to see whether your scores fall into the middle 50% of the common data set for that school. If the admission rates are low, once you get beyond that point, it’s a crap shoot. No number of “Chance me” threads will change that.
The annoying threads are the ones with people asserting their opinion as fact. The “everybody knows this and if you don’t agree you must be a fool” tone/message. Then someone attacks/insults the know-it-all and asserts their opinion, often with an equally or more condescending tone. Ugh.
Whenever anyone says “I know for a fact…” you can be pretty sure it is an opinion.
Whenever anyone says “trust me…” you can be pretty sure…well, you know what I’m thinking.
I have love/hate relationship with CC’s hilariously vindictive nature.
Students who have difficulty transitioning to college and decide to transfer and feel it necessary to rant what a horrible school it is to warn other students that may apply.
OK, I just found a thread that reminded me of another thing that drives me a little crazy:
Could someone research this whole list of colleges and tell me___ about them?
I simply don’t understand the expectation. Why don’t you go to each of the sites and find the info yourself?
^^^somewhat along the same lines…
I read a thread this morning where the OP asked about the submission of test scores to a specific school, one of the best, and next poster answered with the exact verbiage from the school’s site. How do these kids get 4.0’s and 1,600 SAT’s and want to apply to he best schools when they can’t even do a modicum of “research” on their own to figure the test submission rules?
I think “I know for a fact” means “I know someone who said it happened to them”. Unless it’s on the website or policies, I doubt they “know for a fact” most of the time!
My peeve is “how can I raise my SAT 400 points in 3 months”? The question should be, can you? Some kids can, and some kids hit their “max” on that particular test, even if it doesnt show thir abilities. Too many people think just anyone can do it if the just knew the tips to do so!
@sushiritto I think it’s more a matter of won’t , not can’t .
We’re not talking about something along the lines of a financial aid or a scholarship question, but SAT/ACT test submission rules to one of the top universities? The irony is that this student probably asked if he/she should take 5 or 6 AP classes next year. :))
I think I was the one who responded to that thread. Those don’t really bother me. While the language on a school’s site may appear crystal clear to me, who has had some experience in it, I can see how it is sometimes confusing to a newbie.
That’s where I draw the line. So I closed the thread with a very specific reason why I closed, and the OP reported me for excessive moderation. They can’t find the information on a college website, but they can find the flag button pretty quickly.
^ The equivalent of the kids in the past who asked for Harvard’s address. Sorry, if you can’t find it, maybe you’re not up to that level, even if you are a top stats kid.
I think “I know for a fact” means “I know someone who said it happened to them”. Or, my neighbor’s sister’s hairdresser.
^ @lookingforward or, my cousin. ;
Yes, it was you. But I didn’t want to refer to a specific thread, university or poster, for fear of getting into any trouble.
A top stats kid, applying to a top university and isn’t able to click a few buttons, read and find the their test submission criteria. Oy!
