What are the most annoying threads on CC?

Gotta love the “get off my thread cuz you don’t agree with me.” Or the “mods, please shut down this thread”. Usually cuz the OP doesn’t like my answer. Now see, I am trying to write this so all u kidz can hit me back.

Chance threads are great if they are in the right forum. My only issue with them are the ones where all of the information is speculative…I have 3.25 GPA, but it will be 3.7 by the end of the semester…I got a 23 on my ACT, but the next time it will be a 32. Part of that problem, I suppose, is that the average cc student is above average and it seems like everyone is unhappy with otherwise good scores.

@jym626‌ …just saw your post above and had to edit mine…I really don’t like it when people point out how they cheat the system or want advice on how to cheat the system…in state tuition…EFC, etc.

Any thread that devolves into this.

<a href=“xkcd: Duty Calls”>http://xkcd.com/386/

So, in other words, at least three per week.

A thread that asks, “What SAT/ACT score should I aim for to get into XYZ school?”

Doesn’t everyone just aim for the best score they can?

Any thread where it’s clear OP hasn’t researched the question in the slightest. Even worse when they protest ignorance about what they should even search for. Seems to me, if you can write a question about it, you already have all the key words you need to search Google – or even CC.

Threads where some posters intentionally go off the rails in order to get the thing shut down. Guess that falls under the heading ‘I don’t like what your saying so I know how to shut you up’.

Threads started by “new posters”…who are NOT new posters!

Haha, dietz…I know exactly what you are talking about. Some posters kick back, have a drink or two in the evening and start spewing nonsense on threads they have no right being on.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen one of these, honestly.

I have seen some where one could replace the word “got” with the word “need.” :)

Well thats probably the point-- one didn’t NEED, obviously :)

It’s not the threads that bug me so much as the answers people give. “Retake your SAT and try to get an 800 in math. Otherwise MIT won’t even consider your application” or “Dude, you’re in!” Unless you are an admissions rep at the school to which the poster is applying, you really don’t have a clue.

Oh, and I take my first sentence back. I hate, hate, hate chances threads. There should be an auto-reply for people who ask chances questions: Common Data Set. Naviance. Google.

I think the “Chances” forum should be changed into “Help Me With My List.” Those can be good discussions, even if they include some chancing.

I don’t like the “chance me and I’ll chance you back”. I mean really…if the poster is SOOOO good at chancing others, why would he need someone to chance him?

@jym626 … light has broken over Marblehead. :)

When the OP posts a question looking for schools at which he or she would fit in and the only responses are, CAN YOU AFFORD THAT? RUN A NET PRICE CALCULATOR. TALK TO YOUR PARENTS ABOUT WHAT THEY ARE WILLING TO PAY when the thread had nothing to do with money, the OP already understands his or her own financial situation, and the assumption that the parents are paying is somewhat insulting seeing how you’re talking to a stranger with whose situation you’re unfamiliar.

I’m sorry that got a little hostile, but I actually am eager to constructively argue with anyone who disagrees that that this is unnecessary, unhelpful, and somewhat rude…

I think this can be done tactfully, such as “Assuming you and your parents have already discussed finances, then you might consider these schools…”

Well, I do think it is a service to most kids to say “These are some schools I think you would like, but a lot will depend on whether you need financial aid and if so what kind. X school has great need-based FA and schools y&Z give merit. If you haven’t already, you should talk with your parents and ask them to run the NPCs.” Far, far too many kids start out with false assumptions. How many times have we seen adults here saying that grandmother said she would pay, and now that she realizes how much it is she is waffling. How many people have come here and said that their kid was told they would pay full freight for anything, but now that the kid can get $30K off due to merit at their safety the parent wants the kid to give up the elite school they desperately want to attend. It can be very sad.

My pet peeve hasn’t been mentioned yet. Even worse than threads about the Ivies are threads about “Ivy’s” or “IVYS”, as if it’s an acronym.

Right after Consolation talks about someone “waffling,” we have a post by a member named “crepes.” :D

As a sporadic visitor here since both kids out of college, I find the threads with “teaser” headlines that reveal nothing of the content most annoying. Here are some actual examples of subject lines from this forum:
“I find this fascinating”
“Don’t try this at home”
“Early Warning”
“I am embarrassed”.
They are reminiscent of spam e-mails, you learn that there’s no point clicking on them.
