@thumper1 What happens when you hit 50,000 posts???
Lets see…this should be post 50,000. I’m guessing nothing will happen.
^ Congratulations! Changing lives, one post at a time!
On the Chronicle of Higher Education discussion fora, one goes from “Senior Member” to “Distinguished Senior Member”, which is a nice play on academic ranks.
There’s one now where a mom is looking for opinions regarding UVA vs Utah State for her daughter, Utah being cheaper of course, with her main argument for UVA being “but it’s UVA!” I can get the concerns with the different cultures, rankings, and all, but her obsession with UVA is quite irritating.
Similar other thread where people push 40k debt for a premed cuz that will seem like nothing compared with med school debt.
Edit, ok, I see the mom is back re Utah. Edited my comment.
@albert69, that is not her only reason. Misstatement of the thread due to your own prejudices, IMHO.
@Consolation Did I say that was her ONLY reason? Also, I’m curious to hear what my prejudices are.
Well, let’s be honest. I didn’t see that woman’s post (so can’t judge for tone), but UVA is one of the three or four best state schools in the USA. These things do matter, don’t they?
Probably a subject for another thread, but if there was one on annoying replies… The one where every single senior poster on the CC absolutely hammers anyone who inquires about taking out loans. Sure people may not be making the greatest decisions all the time but you can’t make unilateral judgments about loans being ill advised without knowing the whole story. And I’ve got a few friends who are doctors, and adding $40,000 to their loan balances wouldn’t have made much if any difference to them. Once they finished residencies and started practicing, most paid off all their loans in pretty short order. Of course that means you can’t be a rural pediatrician or go do doctors without borders, but most people heading to med school aren’t thinking about that anyway.
You have friends who ARE doctors. That’s different from a kid taking 40k in debt when she thinks she wants to be premed and hasn’t even tested this idea yet, had not chosen a college yet, much less started. No not all docs pay off their loans in short order You can look at AMA detail.
And she did get Yale to up their aid offer, will go there.
Threads where people have no first hand knowledge regarding majors, careers, colleges , but have very strong opinions regarding said majors, careers, colleges. Contrary to popular belief you can’t learn everything you need to know about something by doing a Google search .
Threads where OP is a HS freshman and asks other HS students to rate his/her freshman schedule.
Plus - the comments: No APs? Hmm seems really light to me
Threads where HS students tell other HS students that $160k debt for their dream school is worth it.
I like the ones where they say something to the effect of " it doesn’t matter what your parents want or say, it’s your college experience"
HS students.
It is both amusing and cringing when a 9th grader tries to argue with well experienced adults
@paul2752
Why shouldn’t 9th graders argue with adults? 9th graders already know everything…
Omg, yes, and especially when they haven’t even seen a common app or supps.
Also, the slew of kids up against the deadline who can’t make their school decision. Urgent!!! Make my decision!
Uh…
@lookingforward When I suggested that it should be a discussion one poster should be having with their parents, I was quickly told that his parents had agreed to send him to either school as long as he took out his loan portion. I’d still think that they may have an opinion regarding asking strangers on the internet how their money should be spent.
