What are the most annoying threads on CC?

^^^In that same vein, some posters saying “shacking up” instead of living together.

@LuckyCharms913 I have that poster on ignore. That was not a surprising post from him.

My “shacking up” comment wasn’t in reference to any particular thread, though now I realize it would appear to be just that.

I’ve just noticed that posters can choose to use phrases which are simply factual in nature, or they can use loaded terms which reflect judgment. We probably all do it a certain degree, but some seem to do it more than others.

Any post where the true purpose is for the OP to extol his/her superior parenting skills. Or a poster weighs in with an opinion and then adds (unironically), “I’m very rarely wrong. About anything.”

Sorry, but schadenfreude was invented for people just like you.

Is “shacking up” considered to be a derogatory or judgmental term? I am not in the habit of using the word but I just thought it was slang or a more modern term for living together.

^^ I think it depends on the context. When it’s accompanied by “knocked up” and “illegitimate kid,” I think it is not unreasonable to infer some contempt from the person who used it.

It’s still somewhat pejorative, implies little sound judgment on their parts. Imo. Why not choose to say “living together?”

Threads that used to be fun, and funny, but have turned into **** *** ******* *****. (self censored)

This! Though of course there are those who consider using such phrases to be some kind of badge of honor - no political correctness from them, doncha know. I detest the phrase “popping kids out” because it trivializes birth. And kids.

^. Agreed. Its hard to pick up tone or intent on the internet, and often someone reads more into something than was intended, and what was meant with no ill intent is somehow taken as pejorative or offensive. Why not just ask for clarification instead of assuming the worst?

LOL “doncha know”. Are you Irish?

I do think though that posters sometimes “read” judgment into a post. They extrapolate meaning by building on what was actually said. And of course responding just gets the ball rolling. Sometimes it’s better to let objectionable posts just get buried or they can take on a life of their own. It becomes “tit for tat.”

Fair point, @HarvestMoon1. (Then again, how Irish would I be if I could just ignore certain objectionable posts? )

@HarvestMoon1 I also think some people put their posts out there like piñatas… just waiting for people to take a swing. (I’m a wee bit of a contrarian myself. Thankfully most of my replies go to the draft folder.)

The latest (non-college related) sensational news headlines.

@frazzled1 That’s my favorite post of the day!

Stem, I honestly like some of those threes, like about the magnificent gorilla being shot dead and the shootings in CA. I find CCers to be so informed with latest news.

@m0minmd

I need to learn how to do that!

Yeah, I’d be in jail even more often if I didn’t pause before hitting the “Post Comment” button.

Tell me about it. ~X(

Sometimes I read posts where a kid is asking what his chances are for Ivy League schools (no others of course, just “an Ivy”) and their GPA/ACT/SAT is really low, or maybe their EC’s are really lacking. Among all the posts with realistic feedback and tough love, there’s always somebody who just has to get the kid’s hopes up unrealistically. I sometimes feel like that’s the one comment the OP zeroes in and listens to. Anyway, all this to say that every time I read a post like this, it reminds me of the scene in the movie, “Dumb and Dumber” where Jim Carrey is asking Lauren Holly what his chances are. She replies with “one in a million” and his response is “so you’re telling me there’s a chance… yea!”
