Ones that claim to not be political but clearly are–and they go on too long before being shut down…
And what annoys moderators GREATLY is when people complain about threads not being shut down who have NEVER reported a single post.
I just came here to complain about the “not political” threads as well. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that the thread will be shut down eventually, so why start it?
And I’ve reported plenty of threads/posts for this reason, just not the most recent one.
Just to throw it out there, but YMMV I think is really important, because when talking about things like college admissions (or in an area I have more experience in, music school admissions), there is little science, there isn’t any absolute truths. For example, someone who claims that if you don’t have perfect scores on the SAT, near perfect GPA, 8 AP’s and so forth you won’t get into an Ivy or other elite colleges, is not science, because there are plenty of kids with those kinds of stats who don’t get in, and kids with ones lower than that who do. Admissions in of itself is subjective, there are criteria that can’t always be quantified, or change…
Someone said could you use YMMV type things in a scientific paper, and of course not, because science is a quantified thing, but much of what we talk about on these boards comes down to our own experiences, what we have heard, seen, and what we believe to be true is YMMV. In music, especially performance, there are teachers some people think are the cats meow (likely because they were famous performers), who a lot of people would tell kids to steer clear of, that they were great performers but they don’t do much for their kids. Akin to the whole “HYP or Bust”, there are people on the music forum who will tell you Juilliard is #1, only place to go, only place with real prestige, etc, and they believe that, but the reality is like anything in that world, it all depends, and while some of that can be debunked as myth (within 10 years, a large percentage of Juilliard graduates are no longer in music, for example, and that is factual), some of it is personal experience, that for them or people they knew it worked great…
Why start it? Because for a while it created an excellent discussion about plagiarism. Which is a pretty good topic for a college parent discussion. Because all sorts of issues about attribution and the nuts and bolts of what is plagiarism were discussed in way more detail than any boring from a textbook example could have caused. I still think it started out worthwhile and remained so for quite a few pages.
There was another one after the plagiarism one that was shut down much sooner. There will probably be plenty more by November. Political discussions are forbidden, but it’s become something of a game for people to get their political digs in, regardless.
Threads clearly meant to discuss a non-political aspect of a politics-related event that get turned into a political or religious debate, usually by a handful of folks.
I think if people would start their posts with the words “I think” more often, it’d be way less annoying all around. Some people like to sit around like the Grand Poohbah of The Internet and toss out bon mots of nincompoopery like it’s gospel.
OK, I’ll be honest. YMMV really doesn’t bother me, either. In fact, I use it from time-to-time (mostly because this is my first time through the process, and I don’t know squat). I just used it as an example in this thread so I could add my oh-so-humorous tie-in at the end of my post. You got me @skieurope!
I guess I should start a YMMV thread…
Best post I’ve seen in a while! LOL!
Confidential to @MotherOfDragons
(1) You won CC today
(2) Should we start a thread entitled Bon Mots of Nincompoopery so they can be collected all in one place?!
I think I could not agree more.
But you can’t assume all posters are frantic parents trying to piece things together from impressions and others’ anecdotes. Or talking off the top of their heads about whatever it is. We form quick impressions from posts, but time tells more. And I am annoyed at the “I don’t know so you can’t either” as much as the off the wall opinion statements by some.
@skieurope Can the CC Terms of Service be updated to forbid the “Chance me I’ll chance you back” threads. The blind leading the blind!
Posters who start multiple threads with conflicting information, especially those who claim costs aren’t a concern on one (or more) of them while asking where and how to find the best financial aid on others. The “best” ones are the OPs who get snippy when other, understandably confused, posters ask for clarification.
@TomSrOfBoston While a valid question, since IMO ToS is due for an update, it’s above my pay grade. Try asking the question here.
Any post with “IVY” in all caps. I read it not as shouting, but as someone greatly exaggerating the syllables - “my son goes to an iiiiiivyy.”
Any thread where the OP posts a query and seems to want information. BUT doesn’t give enough information in the OP for respondants to be helpful…AND doesn’t come back to the thread to answer the questions posed by those responding.
I would like to suggest a change that you have to have at least 10 posts before you can create a thread. Seeing someone with one post ask a question, I’m like, I’m not even going to bother.
I’m on another forum that requires a 3 post minimum and you are locked out of posting in all but one very specific newbie thread until you reach the minimum. Also kids are locked out of the parent forum, that is really nice.
