Agreed. In a similar vein, posters that do not provide all the info up front, and then parse the info out bit by bit as though it’s on a need-to-know basis.
Overly dramatic thread titles. “Is my life over?” “Am I screwed?”, etc.
@labegg I disagree. Often students will post in the Parent Forum hoping for good advice from people who know what they are talking about, as opposed to advice from other 17 year olds.
Yeah I don’t mind the kids, for the most part. Every now and then you get one that’s just exhausting, but most of them are pretty cool.
I like kids having access to the parent forum here, it makes sense. and yes most consistent posters are cool. But, IMO it would be nice to have one thread where they do not have posting rights and I also think parents should not be able to post on the HS thread.
Currently there is a parental thread here that is dominated by a HS student, and it may make me look like an Ogre but it annoys me.
I do sometimes wish there could be a limit of starting one new thread a day. Might clear out some of the annoying duplicates from one poster- can I get into Yale, can I get into Princeton, can I get into this impacted major?
I have trouble with some topics started just to start a thread about current events. It’s one thing to get opinions on travel, another to want to get into the nitty gritty of crimes.
Some of the kids are great.
Kids who make their way into the Parental Cafe and stick around are great. 
A limit to posting a new thread would not be unprecedented here, I think you need 10-15 posts before you can PM.
Nope. Not any more. Posters can register, backchannel to their heart’s content and never post a single post. Bad idea, IMO, but nobody asked me.
Annoying are the ones where some posters seem to fancy themselves as the expert on what other people are thinking/feeling. Its fine to opine about what you believe they might be thinking or feeling, but unless you are in their head and do their thinking or feeling for them, to announce “you think” this or “you feel” that is just asking for an argument.
- ETA- now when the self proclaimed experts start to argue with the pompous blowhards, that can occasionally make for some entertaining reading. Most of the time, though, its just annoying.

Jym, lots of different categories of “experts.” Some have “been there,” one way or another, some have done a lot of legwork. All the way down to “my brother said his friend heard.”

@lookingforward- Perhaps you misread? I am not referring to the “real” experts who may have direct knowledge of something, like the adcomms who post here for their schools, for example. I am referring to the self appointed experts on many topics. Specifically, though, what I am saying here that what is annoying is that these people fancy them selves as experts in what the other poster is thinking/feeling" , which, of course, they can never be.
Yeah, there’s a HS student with 4,000+ posts in under two years whom I’d bet money most readers think is a parent or a college counselor based on the content and tenor of his posts.
How do I know he’s a HS student? Well, I don’t for certain, but I do remember when he first arrived at CC. He was clearly very bright (if pedantic) and wrote quite well. But over time I noticed that he’d taken on the persona of an “expert.” After a long post he made explaining how someone should choose a college, I asked him if he’d followed his own advice. He PM’ed me to explain he wasn’t ignoring my question, just working to “consider what reply may be relevant to others.” Which (big surprise) never came. And it’s not that he doesn’t offer reliable information, but I feel like he’s intentionally misleading others about his expertise. His posts are kind of how I imagine a Fiske Guide animated by AI. 
I feel like a lot of threads would stay on track better if folks would just disclose up front where they’re coming from. I’m sure I’m guilty of this as much as anybody, because it’s easier (and quicker) to just answer a question than explain how you came to that conclusion. I sometimes wish CC members were allowed to have a two line “signature” like many listservs I used to belong to. I understand why we don’t here (it would undermine anonymity), but I still wish it was clear who is a student, who is a parent, and who is a professional college counselor and not just how many posts somebody has made. Context matters.

If we see that happening, we delete the duplicate posts. Please report cases like this.
Some have different sorts of legit experience, different pockets of info they do know, different college sorts. And different reasons to state or not state how those observations accrued. There are some parents, with little more than their own kids’ experiences to go on, who I, nonetheless, think are very on track. And some with no stated experience other than hanging out their shingle, they self-published a book or earn money advising, but never worked in a college environment. Or did so years ago.
I also wish there was more info, if you wanted it. I think “mother of dragons” is pretty self-explanatory, but it’d be nice if you could see that I had 2 daughters, aged 15 and 17, without me having to preface it all the time in context of a discussion because I can’t assume anyone will remember. I can’t remember how old and what the info is on other posters’ kids because it’s just too much information!
Also, “registered user” and “Senior member” mean nothing to me, and I don’t know why they’re under our post count. But hey, no forum is perfect. On the other forum I’m constantly wishing there was a like button.
Posts that ask for advice, but every suggestion is shot down almost instantly and for the flimsiest reasons.
