What are the most annoying threads on CC?

The classic I am a {insert any URM} and have a 2.5 GPA and 1200 SAT, can I get into HYPS?

Someone literally just posted something about being Native American and having a 3 GPA and 27 ACT and their chances and UCB and Stanford and think since they are NA they automatically get a pass on having high academics.

That poster didn’t “think since they are NA they automatically get a pass on having high academics,” though–he or she was asking if being NA would help. There’s a difference between asking if something is the case and assuming it is.

Regardless, it speaks to the general assumption that URM = auto admit anywhere that’s pretty common.

Asking if it would help is one thing, but that’s if ones academics are in the range of the school. They weren’t assuming auto admit but they though that poor academics would be made up for by URM status.

Is anyone else sick of hearing about high school student “internships” and start up companies? I used to call these things jobs and hobbies. Maybe some people are doing amazing, groundbreaking things, but I suspect not nearly as many as think they are.

Yeah. A kid is a kid, not a top research PhD or a Gates. The work is good experience, can be a lot better than founding some sit-around club. But you’re still green.

I think the word internship is overused when referring to summer jobs for college students as well. Sometimes a job is just a job.

Not annoyed at the thread itself, but really annoyed at finding out about states that have cut school budgets so much that high schools (Oklahoma in this instance) don’t offer even precalculus, have no janitor, large class sizes, and no way to hire more teachers.

What’s with these kids who want tippy tops and can’t convert a percentage (or a gpa based on 100) to a 4 point scale?

It’s not a very simple conversion, is it? They’d have to take each class separately and determine whether the percentage grade was above 90% (for an A, and so on for B, etc.) and then average THOSE grade points. It’s not as easy as 94 GPA = 4.0, or anything. They could have all grades at 94% (4.0) or they could have some A equivalents and some B equivalents.

Sure it is. An 89.5/100 (the cum the kid gave) is .895 (the percent) x 4.0 (the target scale) = 3.58. One one thread, another poster got it wrong.

I do not think that is how it works.

A 94 average would come out to a 3.76 by your logic, but if every grade that person ever got is a 94%, the GPA would be a 4.0 even by the pluses-and-minuses scale, and certainly by the one that only grades in integers.

You’re right, it would be seen as an A average, while 3.76 implies A-. Hmmm. But it still rankles that kids can’t do this math.

It could be a common thread… I hate it when a user comments something sassy and they get like 50 likes, when it has nothing to do with what the thread is about. [-X

^^^It is a tradition on CC that a thread can veer off topic and a moderator will then redirect it back on topic. As long as you don’t hijack a thread.

Thats not what I am referring too @TomSrOfBoston You have a good point and are right but thats not what I meant

Please direct me to the “off topic” post that got 50 likes, and I’ll likely make it 51.

OP typing: “Hi, my name is ____, and I want to go to the top school. I have great grades, can I go?”

My response (in my head): "No, you can not go because people at top schools wouldn't be dumb enough to write their real name on a public thread and ask for a chance without research.

Haha so true! @apple1893
