Common core math pushed Algebra ! from grade 8 in many districts to grade 9. Geometry in grade 10, algebra 2 in grade 11. Pre-calculus has disappeared–its topics have been re-distributed into grades 9-11. Trig as a course has also vanished. Calculus in some form is becoming grade 12 math for many students. Some schools have resorted to college pre (non-honors level) calculus. Not sure how that works…
And post their budget to prove it.
Probably related to the student who complained about not qualifying for FA even though her family chose to live in an area where even the moldy, grossest houses start at $2,000,000.
The $350k person hijacked the thread completely. Hijacking a thread, especially with such first world problems, is super annoying.
Oh I love those, because you get to be all “bless your heart, you think you’re in charge.”
Sort of…but can’t just blame her. She just made a statement (didn’t like the assumption that if you have a high income you have a ton of extra cash laying around). Others decided to start pursing and asking questions and start making school recommendations etc.
Threads where posters complain about not getting work-study.
That really gets me.
Ones where posters throw in their Ivy League alma mater when it is unrelated to the topic of the post to attempt to give more weight to their opinion.
^^ Yeah, I feel like a lot of my old grad school classmates from Penn do that way too much on social media.
^ lol! @dfbdfb
Ones where the OP has exactly one post, and a somewhat convoluted story, and… well… you know what I think.
Or threads where a poster with 1 post appears and starts ripping into some long time poster. You know that 1 post poster has another screen name with over 10,000 posts – just not enough b***'s.
^Sock puppets, yep, you can usually tell.
I hope the “Say it here” thread won’t turn into a thinly veiled political commentary for the foreseeable future.
Posts where parents repeatedly proclaim that students who take more than 7-8 AP classes are grade grabbers or gaming the system. Very annoying.
Posts where parents repeatedly claim that students who take more than 1-2 AP classes are grade grubbers or whatever! (You know, because NO student actually prefers not to be bored stiff in class…)
“Chance me”'s for schools with a 90% acceptance rate that start with
W/UW: 4.6/4.0
SAT: 2370
ACT: 33
APs: 10, only 4’s and 5’s
Etc…
I am really annoyed by threads where the poster speaks about applying somewhere early decision, and refuses to acknowledge the binding nature of that agreement. ED does not equal EA!! They speak of receiving an ED acceptance and NOT dropping other pending applications, and blantantly speak of not honoring it. And $$ is not the issue. If replies question their actions, they get indignant.
Those who double or triple deposit will go to the same circle of hell, IMO. Play fair, be ethical. Gaming the system because you don’t feel the rules apply to you just gets my goat!!
Threads where international students complain about how expensive American universities are and that in their home country universities are free. Seems there is a simple solution for them…
Lengthy “humble” brags.
I know it’s been said, but where the unknowing (adults) take advice from the unknowing (and get excited, to boot.) And diss sensible ideas. As if just winning some competition(s) is enough.
I know some are intimidated by the thought of adding activities. But hey, name some top colleges and the game changes. And what;s so hard about a few well chosen adds?
And yes, in the process, lots of satisfied bragging.
