What percentage of FP are gov’t workers overseas? (i.e. gov’t pays for BS)

We’re in the NYC private school scene and my sister has 2 kids at BS’s. From what we both see, most of the full pays are full pay with ease. The only engineers (no company sold) or just 2 worker bee families each making low six figures tend to be kids who manage to get some aid because the family is large or has unusual expenses.

The exceptions seem to be people without access to a reasonable public school. This year in NYC we’re seeing families at the low end of being able to full pay move to the suburbs rather than commit to 4 years at a private, especially those with more kids to follow.

My sister and her family are in the make just enough to pay in full category. They do this because they get family help. But still, their daughter notes the vast difference in life styles between she and many of her classmates who spend every break on amazing trips. She recently joined one of her family’s yacht for Spring break!

hmom5, what’s you described sounds reasonable, or is more in line with the intuition of a novice like me. You are very knowledgeable on a whole host of issues regarding private education. Ever thought of being an education consultant as a side job, or are you one already?

I wonder how many people are going to accept for this year with hopes of if things don’t get better, tapping fa after they are in. This must be the nightmare scenario for the schools.

We are full pay and would not qualify for financial aid. However, we live in CT where it is so expensive to live. I just got a $1,300 bill for my dog after 2 days at the vet. My husband works for an investment bank as a lawyer. This year is hard, as pay is down, however, we want our child to have the best education and will do what it takes. She is going to a HADES school and we have already prepped her about some of the lifestyles her classmates may live. Certainly, she will be able to pay for a movie or a piece of pizza, but no one will be vacationing on our yacht.

Catg - Yep you hit it !

Watertester - Is that a new pick up line or job offer?

What, it’s out of fashion to complement someone for their knowledgeability? :)

I think many FP parents would do what Sk8 is doing. They would want their kids to have an uninterrupted 4 years of high school unless they REALLY run out of means, especially if the school is great and the kid likes to be there.

sk8 is your daughter entering bs next fall or is she already enrolled?

Love the line about noone will be vacationing on our yacht!
We are FP and noone will be visiting us at our beach home on Nantucket either! :)

catg: FA officer did mention to me that although we did not qualify for FA this year we would be “in front of the line” for FA next year (before the people who had never applied before) if we had a job loss or something. He said “especially since you were honest about applying for FA from the outset.”

My daughter will be in the 3rd form next year. She is coming from public middle school. She has had her eye on boarding school for a while, so we have been able to give this a lot of thought. Also, since she will be in BS, I can return to the work force which is also helpful.

Thanks watertester, in fact it’s an area that interests me greatly for a retirement career and I’m busy learning about the business. I’m taking courses by CC is the best teacher!

Vermont has a very quiet voucher program that is funding students in Western Mass private pre-preps and Preps (Eaglebrook, Bement, Berkshire, Charlemont, Deerfield, NMH, Stoneleigh Burnham, etc.)

Vernon Vermont does not have a school system beyond 6th grade. Using a state-wide school cost formula, Vernon gives parents a choice: the students can attend a nearby public (Brattleboro VT); that public will receive $11,500 next year as tuition with transportation. Or parents can designate in-state or out-of-state private or public. Vernon school department will cut a check for the same amount to the designated school; parents must provide transportation.

I’d give my eye teeth if my school district (which receives lots of these funds) would offer the same deal to me. It works for Vermont - how do we push for other locations.

I’m not sure other than writing our congressional Reps. How did you find out about Vernon Vermont?

School vouchers have long been advocated by many people, including, notably, famed economist Milton Friedman, and alas, have almost no future given the current political climate. They exist in limited form in a few (too few) places. Too bad imho…

They take away the incentive of buying an expensive house… Somewhat? I have not really thought much about it.

You mean the incentive of buying a pup tent and a mattress.

Manchester, Vermont does the same. Its secondary students attend Burr and Burton Academy.

IS Sam still the LAX coach there?
