What are the purposes of those chance me threads?

I do not understand why so many kids want to be chanced by other kids. Anybody explain?

Ego strokes for the kids with great stats.

Ego strokes, or just general reassurance…

I won’t lie…i’m guilty of using them…I kinda used it to reaffirm that my matches were in fact matches(they were), and that my reach was remotely possible…

I mean, I know they are accurate, but they did lessen my anxiety, AND they are the reason I decided to apply to Yale…

so, some good can come out of them

I used chances threads and they were very helpful. Yes, perhaps the majority of chances threads seem useless, but the truth is that - at least in my case - they can serve a purpose. I was using “chance me” threads to gauge how I would fare at each school (and in turn, what other caliber of schools I should choose) as well as what schools fit my needs. Chance threads introduce me to QuestBridge, which in turn helped me get into Stanford. Not all chance threads are created equally.

They should be used for people who don’t really know where they stand in regards to a school’s applicant pool and can’t get good help from the guidance staff. Unfortunately, a large amount of people use if for reassurance even when they know where they stand.

I think it’s just therapy for a lot of anxious kids. They’re all nervous about the uncertainty of where they’ll be going to school next year.
