While my heritage on my mothers side is Cherokee Indian, I am by no means culturally American Indian. Whenever I am faced with this question I never know whether to check the box or not. Are there rules as to how to categorize yourself?

The question asks for you to best describe yourself. It can be interpreted to mean what you legally are and what you consider yourself to be based on what cultural values you follow. I would say put it since its half of your heritage but then put what you are from your dads side.

College admissions uses the same definitions as the US Census, see post #1 of the Race FAQ sticky thread at the top of this forum.

It doesn’t sound like you self-identify as AI/AN. This category is different from the others as the CA asks for an enrollment number and some colleges send additional forms to fill out if you mark AI/AN.

You also must be registered with a tribe to be treated as NA.

Interesting i didnt know that. Makes sense though i guess
