What are you doing to take care of yourself as you age?

As we age, we have to worry about cognitive issues, physical issues, mental health issues, etc.
What are you doing to help yourself stay healthy?

A couple of things I’m doing -
Trying to incorporate new exercises to help as I age.
Taking my vitamins more regularly, and considering adding some supplements.
Starting to do more research on what I could/should be doing.

I’m reading this while on the treadmill. Exercise, including balance and flexibility, are key to me.

NYT puzzles and crossword every day. Taking advantage of my health care benefits. Exercising, but not perpetually training for something. Eating healthy, eliminating alcohol. Plenty of sleep and time with family.

This past year has been so much that I’ve just had to slow my life down. I’ve also accepted that diet and exercise don’t always work and sometimes you really do need medication!

World, quordle, and walk 5 miles most days. Also, we play backgammon.

More for enjoyment - less about getting old.

Unfortunately getting older health issues are a real thing and catching up with me. I feel good. I’m still physically good - but some things are unavoidable.

Keeping up with my immunizations. Reducing falls risk by eliminating tripping and slipping hazards. I put husband on suppressive acyclovir–he gets frequent cold sores and there is some weak reason to believe that suppressing HSV-1 (the virus that causes cold sores) may decrease Alzheimers risk.

Oh a lot - prompted not only by aging, but also in part by a cancer diagnosis a few years ago.

First, I do intermittent fasting to keep my weight down. Next, I participate on a dragon boating team at least once a week for both exercise (cardio) and community and fun. I do yoga a few times a week, preferably in the park in the fresh air, but sometimes at home. And I’ve started to meditate a few times a week because I realized stress was taking a toll on me.

Supplements I take: probiotics, psyllium husk, and a combo magnesium/vitamin d/zinc.

I also read regularly and I recently started self-studying Latin for fun/brain exercise.

And I walk my dog three times a day, so I get out and move, whether I want to or not

Exercise:
The week H and I retired in 2016 we got a dog. We walk her between 3-4 miles a day. She does not let us skip a day. This has been great for consistent exercise along with weight lifting. Socialization with neighbors are a plus.

Diet:
We are eating better and do primarily a mediterranean diet, edging toward vegetarian. Cook our own meals- get takeout once a week. Very little alcohol. Exploring beer and wine substitutes.

Mind:
Take the free Coursera courses online and joined a bookclub to encourage learning and reading. Do our own taxes now and active online with social media. Have 2 instagrams I post to. New info and keeping up with technology a must. Do something different- keeps life interesting. Went to a Paul McCartney concert in Seattle, went to a imax show in Los Angeles.

Social:
Do habitat for humanity builds and volunteer at the national park. Encourages socialization, learning new things, and doing something outside of ourselves. Have friends over for snack and visit our kids and grandkids (out of state) often.

Keeping up with the millennials:
Our kids are in that group and I keep note of what they wear, how they decorate, how they think. We incorporate parts of what we like in being able to stay modern.

Bioidentical hormones. Those are a big deal in the fight against the diseases of aging. Targeted supplements recommended by my doctor. Exercise and attempt to eat halfway decently.

Similar to most above. I’ve always been physically active. I started working on balance/yoga in my 40s. As I get older, I am tightening up some on the diet. Fewer processed foods.

Sleep is important. I have never sleep long at night, and naps have always been key for me. I feel amazing when I get my daily naps in.

I also am mindful of always sitting on the floor some each day. I want sitting on the floor to be comfortable, and also getting up and down off the floor.

I didn’t start leaning languages at 49 to help my brain, but I’ve since learned how good it is. I do love learning German, especially listening to real podcasts for German people about subjects that interest me in English. That blows my mind that I can do this now! I’m not as crazy about French, but I’m going to keep dabbling with that as well. I’ve also done sudoku and other puzzles for many years

Keep up with my cancer screenings is also newly important to me.

Lots of exercise - different types + long daily walks.

Nutrition - Focusing on a Mediterranean style diet; avoiding processed foods. Select supplements, but no psyllium husks for me, @worriedmomucb … turns out I’m very allergic!

Brain games - crosswords, number games, NY Times games, Sodoku, Scrabble, solitaire, FreeCell.

Laughter - H & I attend comedy shows weekly. We enjoy laughing together.

Spending time with my kids and GD. Playing with GD keeps me moving in ways I wouldn’t normally move!

I try to be open to new ideas and experiences, and I stay on top of current events.

I am trying to decide where to volunteer, which is important to me. I have put it off because I am prone to getting myself over involved. I’m almost at the point where I think I can go into a volunteer role without getting over committed.

This is a relatively new supplement I’ve added because, during my last colonoscopy, it was found that I have diverticulosis. Didn’t even know that. So I’ve added this as a fiber supplement to try to keep things moving better and avoid any further problems.

You volunteer here sharing your expertise regularly.

Daily exercise. Mishmash -lots of walking, HIIT/Tabata , some short (3 miles or less) runs, swimming, a little weights.

Keeping up with news and trends via all forms of media.

Continue to work. I like the work routine and the paycheck that goes among with it.

It’s good for heart health and cholesterol, which is why I added it. Unfortunately, I began to get intermittent itching all over - and it kept getting worse. When I stopped the psyllium, the itching also stopped. I was disappointed that it didn’t work out for me.

Walking most days (5 or more miles), weights and stretching 3 times a week and lots of reading. I also still work right now which keeps my mind active and H and I are spending most of what we make working on great travel at this point in life which also keeps us young!

People whose dogs take them for walks tend to be healthier due to increased exercise.

Started an exercise journey in February. Was just tired of too many things being harder than they should be.

I read a lot of articles and stay up with current events.
