What are you seeing in the economy, investment and speculation world, or job market thread?

I was reading this story from seeking alpha.

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-07-24/stocks-suffer-worst-week-year-amid-biotech-bloodbath-commodity-carnage-bond-buying

Towards the end of the article there is a list of commodity prices and most commodities have seen pretty good price declines.

What does this drop in commodity prices mean?

Interest rates are so incredibly low. Why are new home sales, to put it nicely, so mediocre?

On the positive side, I had CNBC on tv. I wasn’t paying that much attention. I heard Kayvon Beykpour on CNBC. So I turned around and looked at the screen. I thought, “I know him”. I saw his name on a little league roster list. I don’t know. 15 or 16 years ago. Has to be the same guy. How many Kayvon Beykpour’s are there? I looked at him on CNBC. He is the right age. In his 20’s.

Turns out…it was the same guy who was on the little league roster. Kayvon sold his company to Twitter for $100 million in cash plus stock. That little kid grew up to run a $100 million company in his 20’s.

The product the company produces is called Periscope.

very interest -periscope.
job market I’m seeing an upswing. 3 years ago D and SIL had no job prospects- in architecture -none- got one and moved to Germany and both got jobs- moved back this summer and both got nice jobs in the USA. Architecture jobs seem to lag behind the job market. So I think things are looking up in my neck of the woods.

There is a lot of pent-up demand. It could be a wild ride.

@rockymtnhigh, that’s great.

My immediate relatives in the private sector have always done well but in the last year they are doing even better.

A nephew got a job offer at over a 100% increase and a niece was interviewing and her company gave her a 40% raise.
My sister just put in a new kitchen- had to cost over $100k. It is beautiful.

It’s getting very hard to get a contractor come out in my area. I am sure it’s due to the economy picking up.

Yes finding a contractor is very difficult. In NJ quotes are coming in at over $300 a square foot for additions.

Positive stories.

Sons friends are buying houses .
Daughter has had two job offers that came knocking on her door. Current job offering yet another raise to keep her from leaving.
Spouses old company is still laying off older expensive employees like crazy. He is picking up a consulting job so there is still money out there.
Neighborhood houses are selling in a day for asking price although assessed value is lower than agreed price so often seller sells for less which is not helping.

All in all looking up here in mid atlantic coast.

My staff collected $687 million in unpaid taxes last year. That was up significantly from prior years.

Wow! Tom1944, why the increase?

Does NJ have an estate tax?

We do have an estate tax.

We instituted some effective compliance initiatives and to be honest my staff now feels really comfortable that we will back them up as long as they follow procedures.

Previously they would have the rug pulled out from under them even when they were right.

Each subsequent buildup since a crash has been slower and taken longer in each boom/bust cycle since the '80’s. By traditional measures, this bull run is long in the tooth, but I think that it will be even longer than the 2000-2007 run. We aren’t even in the exuberance phase yet. However, a crash that is even deeper than 2008 will be terrifying.

Our D is starting to get more “gig work,” which is how she does things in her field. S hasn’t mentioned much of a change for him, but his office did get their full budget approved, including travel for professional development, which surprised them all.

I am seeing houses sell quickly here and it seems as if the job market is picking up, too.

Economy in Ct may be picking up a bit. Real estate is still in the toilet with a number of homes in my neighborhood on the market. My company is doing great but it doesn’t matter much to me as I’m done in 5 months. We’re in the process of fixing our homes - hopefully to downsize. Getting a bit nervous with all that needs to be done.

@Doct, are you going to stay in Ct?

Yes. Our daughter is getting married in June and we plan on staying near by. Her fiancee has very strong family ties to the state as we do. Interestingly enough, both he and his parents graduated from the same high school as my wife and I. His family still lives in the town we grew up in.

@Doct, congratulations! Cool story. That has to be rare. All four in-laws graduating from the same high school!

Where is your daughter now as far as medicine goes? Is she still in residency?

You’ve got a great memory! Nothing comes easy here. In her third year, around Christmas time, just months after her brother and grandfather died, she had an “ethical lapse” which resulted in a suspension. This ended up with us bringing a federal lawsuit against the University which just a few months ago, she won. The settlement resulted in the university paying off her medical school loans. She became so turned off to the medical field, she has gone into high school science teaching.
