What are your experiences with standby testing?

I want to sign up to take Math II and Lit in October. I have 2 choices:

-I can take the risk and try standby testing at a test centre very close by
-or I can register for certain at a test centre about 300km away

Which one would be the better option? What are your experiences with standby testing - how often are places available? Is it a big risk?

I live in Malaysia if that helps.

It worked out well for my son. I called the local center ahead of time and learned from the person in charge of admnistering the test that in all her years there, they never had to turn away a stand-by tester. So I felt confident in sending my son there on a stand-by basis, and he was able to take the test. BUT, it was early in his junior year, and I knew he would have several other opportunies to take the SATs if the standby did not work out.

I would call the local test center and see if they can give you an idea how successful you might be in taking the test on a stand by basis. It probably differs from area to area.

Being in Malaysia, the rules may be different as in foreign countries they may not send any extra packets and generally there are lesser no shows. You do not want to spend the day before the test worrying if you will get in. Again, even if they allow standby, there are only limited seats and hence you have to get their early. Call the local test center but my suggestion is take the sure one 300K away.
