What are your favorite apps?

I’m not getting the most out of my smart phone, and I need to learn about the wonderful world of apps. What are your favorites?

There was a thread last month that might help you.
<a href=“Top 10 Free iPhone Apps - weigh in on your favorite - Parent Cafe - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parent-cafe/1663768-top-10-free-iphone-apps-weigh-in-on-your-favorite.html</a></p>

Thanks, ek, I completely missed that at the time. I have an Android, but I can adapt those suggestions as needed.

I should have made clearer that I’m familiar with the standard stuff – weather, traffic, map apps. What I was hoping to hear about was “oddball” apps – for example, the purring app which D found to keep her new kitten company – or things that might be less obvious such as using the phone as a level. But if people feel this topic has been exhausted, that’s fine.

yelp, SMSBackup+ (send all SMS messages to my Gmail - sometimes I need to keep important info from SMS).

I’ve found What’sApp very useful. I don’t have to pay for roaming charge when my kid is studying abroad. Facetime is another one, maybe only available on iPhone(I don’t know), but I save long distance call overseas.

Great question OP. I’m in the weather, maps, zillow and yelp category. Although I do have the ‘whip’ app! I feel out of touch. Just the other day one of the Apple TV clickers stopped working. D immediately launched an iPhone app and clicked from there. Who knew.

On a somewhat related topic, I just installed DoNotTrackMe from Abine onto my laptop/desktop browsers. All of the stupid ads have disappeared. It also let’s you know how many trackers have been blocked when go to a site. Let’s just say…we are being watched here.

If you are a Metro North train rider, there is a great app called Train Time. It’s really good!

I have some home automation apps i like. I control my wifi thermostats with one (though Nest is probably better) and i use WeMo to control devices in our home. In terms of apps that arent associated with hardware, i like:

Waze - gets me to work faster.

Knots 3D - shows me how to tie various knots.

TvGuide app - faster than using the cable guide.

Imdb - movie database, but you can use the website too.

Speedtest - to test your internet speeds.
