What are your favorite things?

I’m “redecorating” the main rooms of our house, without professional help! ( I’m frugal & I live to research) Although we have odds and ends inherited from relatives, this is the first time Ive tried to redo the whole, as I would be the first to admit, domestic, doesn’t come easily to me. :o

I also grew up with furnishings that I thought were just this side of hideous- albeit excellent quality so I was always afraid of making a very expensive mistake. ( Early American - with brass eagle lamps & braided rugs- when my friends had chrome & glass and sheepskin rugs)
The 60’s-70’s werent much better for home decor than they were for fashion.

But with both of the Ds seriously involved with young men who are way above our socio-economic strata, I’m motivated to put some lipstick on the pig. ( & since I was forced to at least temporarily retire, I am spending more time @ home than I ever have.)

I used to like very clean design, almost industrial with scandinavian thrown in, but now i am looking at crystal chandeliers- for the kitchen!
I haven’t started putting doilies on anything- but did you know they still sell them?

Entertain me with memories of your favorite things.

I always liked Persian rugs- both my grandmother & great aunt had very beautiful Karastan oriental rugs (my grandmother worked at Frederick & Nelson dept store - which was owned by Marshall Fields- She bought everything there, even toilet paper & laundry soap), that kept me entertained by playing hot lava on the designs.

Plus, how can you not love something that looks better with age?

Love Persian rugs, think they can go with practically any decor.

My favorite things are some of my parents/grandparents depression glass. I’m a fan of mixing the old with the new.

By the way, the very wide lamps are now back in style.

We love mixing old and new also.
Our very old house is filled with a real conglomerate of furnishings and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I like to think that the pieces all pull together…not sure if visitors agree!

Our dining room ‘set’ is comprised of eight old maple Ethan Allen ladderback chairs with rush seats that were my mother’s. I’ve had the seats redone once. The chairs are indestructible. The table that went with them was awful so I bought a Pottery Barn table second hand. It’s huge and plain and straight lined. I love the contrast against the curves in the chairs. We can fit 12 people easily.

One of our only new purchases was our maple four poster bed that we had handmade 20 yrs ago. It’s a simple reproduction with graceful posts; it is so sturdy and fits our house perfectly.
Love house sales, hard to pass old furniture up.

My favorite room is my dining room with it’s James River inspired mahogany sideboard and china cabinet. Timeless.
