What are YOUR SAT I Preparation methods?

What books do you use? What are your average hours of studying? Do you use flashcards? What are good ways to build critical reading and writing? For the math, you do just review? Do you use different books for each topic on the SAT?

Overall, What are your methods???

Books: Princeton Review Cracking the SAT, Word Smart, and College Board’s blue book

Time: 1-2 hours a night depending on homework load and ECs, a little more on weekends.

Flashcards: Make your own. You’ll learn the vocab better if you write it yourself. 3x5 cards are cheap.

CR and Writing: The best way to improve CR is just to read. What level English classes are you in? Read classic lit, quality magazines (NOT Time; it’s more editorial than actual news). For Writing, practice, practice, practice. There are some good templates in the Cracking book.

Math: Make SURE you know the formulas, and practice, practice, practice. There are separate math workbooks out there that you can get too.

Hope this helps!

KidNovelist—Search CC, there r hell lot of threads on this topic.

What kind of math workbooks? What kind of quality magazines? (Ironically, I’m ONLY subscribed to TIME LOL)

Thanks a lot though

magazines such as The Economist, or the New Yorker…just sophisticated magazines with good vocabulary and well structured sentences…and boring…believe it or not that is something needed to prepare for CR passages…

the math workbook from barrons is good…grubers is one of the best…but its not a workbook

Ya, I certainly thought that the Gruber’s book was excellent (even though I don’t own it). I don’t know why more people don’t utilize it.

I think it’d be most helpful to include the score goals also.

Books: I use all Barron’s. All the workbooks, 2400, and obviously the Blue Book.

Time: 1-2 hours a night depending on homework load and ECs, a little more on weekends.

Flashcards: I’m not making any. Just learn it, that’s my style.

CR and Writing: I’m trying to “just read.” I just finished “The Catcher in the Rye” and I already read some of “The World is Flat.” I already reviewed over the grammar rules with “Elements of Style.” Utilizing Barron’s Workbook though.

Math: I already have a good score in this area, so I’m not too worried. Using Barron’s Workbook though.

Hope this helps!

Does anyone else besides me occasionally do the ‘SAT question of the day’? I fell a little behind but I try and do it as much as possible.

glucose101- what was your SAT score?
I am currently taking practice tests in Barron book, and compared to the Blue Book, I find that the Barrons Test are harder. Would this help your SAT score?

Books: Princeton Review, College Board, McGraw Hill

Time: Whenever I have time and have energy to, alot more on weekends

I don’t use flashcards. For vocab I just read the words every once in a while and try to use them in actual conversation. Sometimes i subscribe to vocab podcasts and listen to them while i walk to the bus stop before school.

CR and writing: Reading alot and memorizing grammar rules and idioms. Trying to read “harder” pieces of writing, like articles in Scientific American.

Math: I’m alright with this section… so just practicing to keep in shape.

I use the Sat Question of the Day occasionally

I do SAT Question of the DAy evryday, but I don’t think it helps out a lot. I’m thinking of doing those 30 at a time which might be helpful since concentrating for one question evryday seems tough enough as u r likely to forget that thing next day!
