What are your thoughts about travel in the time of Covid?

Does anyone know the rules for NY, traveling into Long Island? My daughter is supposed to go to a sports try out, but they are telling her she’ll have to quarantine for 14 days upon arriving. The team is also requiring her to covid test 2-4 days before travel.

If she has a negative test, does she still have to quarantine for 14 days? She was going for a weekend. She can’t spend 14 days there and then stay another 3-4 days for the try out. The NYers don’t want to move the try outs to another state as then they would have to quarantine when they return (which would be fine with us as they’d be at their homes/schools and could WFH or study from home).

@twoinanddone what state is your daughter coming from?

@twoinanddone, I don’t see any provisions for eliminating the quarantine requirement in the event of a negative test. :frowning:

Canadians (I think we have a few) can you speak to the app that is available in Canada that does some contact tracing? I read about it recently. I’m assuming it’s the kind of thing that if your phone tracks you in a location (like a restaurant) and then someone who was there comes down with COVID you get alerted??

Very interesting to hear about the quarantine in Australia. @ckd022 how are you doing only 2 days in - are you alone or are there others in your party? If you’re willing check in here and there and let us know how you are managing.

Also how does the food work? Who is providing it and do you have choices or can you request as needed (I know that’s sort of off topic but I’m so curious!)

Here are the NY guidelines frequently asked questions. There is specifically one asking if a negative Covid test can be used in lieu of quarantine, and the answer is no in this document.

I think someone needs to discuss this with the people sponsoring these try outs. Surely your kid isn’t the only one from an affected state who was planning to come.

Any chance the state your kid lives in is close to getting OFF the naughty list?

I wish I were in Australia - or New Zealand - for the duration of Covid, preferably with my family.

She’s in Colorado now, and Colorado just went on the list Oct 6. Colo has had a spike in some areas (not the entire state) the overall number is still lower than many other states. Boulder had the spike, shut down CU and is now opening up again on Wednesday. I guess there is a chance Colorado will come off the list.

I think there are only 15 kids trying out in the US (foreign team). Of those 15, most are in NY (and some of the coaches), although not all in the NYC area. They will be bringing their germy selves to NYC. They could pick a different state but then all the NYers would have to quarantine upon return.

I think they’ll have those who can get there to go, but my daughter can’t take off ~20 days for this. She has a job while others are in hs or college.

For what it’s worth, states do come on and off NY’s naughty list. My niece came to stay with me from St. Croix in August. The U.S. Virgin Islands were on the list for a couple of weeks before, but came off the week she arrived. And for what it’s worth, most of the cases in the USVI were in St. Thomas, a different island from St. Croix where she was staying with her mom.

We are having the same deliberations/negotiations about Thanksgiving.

Hate to be Debbie Downer, but I think it is very likely that by Thanksgiving and Christmas numbers will be up everywhere and large (or even small) gatherings will be a very bad idea.

I think numbers are going to be up too, but we’re still getting together.

FIL is the only parent we have left and we have no idea how much longer he will have due to his age and health. BIL is no longer concerned about the virus. He’s going be there regardless of whether we go or not. If H wants to have time with his dad, we have to go.

It’s the same thing with our DIL’s side of the family this weekend. Her grandfather is not going to live long due to other health issues and he wants to go watch a theater show at a place still open here in PA. Their choice is to spend time with him or not. We’re distancing from them afterward to not spread anything if they catch it, but I’d never tell them not to go.

I wish life were different, but it’s not. Hard choices have to be made sometimes.

Yes, I agree case count is going to continue to rise.

We are thinking through what we can do to make a gathering as safe as we realistically can (realizing that not gathering is the only completely safe option).

The 8 of us who wish to gather (my family, my SIL family and my parents) are all currently living life pretty low on the exposure risk continuum (working and schooling from home, not socializing indoors or dining out). By the time we get to November and outdoor socializing is probably not a reasonable option anymore, our risk of exposure will diminish even further. We are talking about testing and quarantining for a period beforehand.

Our Thanksgiving at my parents house is normally over 20 people. If it doesn’t rain it could be outside. Our family does not feel comfortable with that many people together so we are not doing Thanksgiving together. My mom is sad as it is the holiday she always hosts, but she understands why we are not coming.

@abasket Quarantine is going well. I’ve been very busy with work so there hasn’t been much slow time.

As far as food, the hotel brings three meals per day. There is a knock on my door, and a bag is left outside for me to pick up. Garbage is double bagged, and left outside the room to be picked up once a day in the evening after dinner.

The only people I’ve seem face to face since I’ve been here has been the two nurses who came to give me my first covid test today.

Back to the food, the first two days I got what they sent. Upon check in, they did ask for dietary restrictions. For the rest of the days, I was able to chose between two options per meal provided by the hotel. I filled out one booklet that contained my meal choices for the rest of the quarantine period.

Three days down.

We finally made arrangements to clean out my parents condo. We just can’t put it off any longer. We will drive down, mask up, bring our own wipes and sanitizer, and pray for the best. We are seeing some family who have been as strict with rule following as we have, but H wants to see his dad who we haven’t seen since January. They haven’t been as safe.

I’m crazy nervous and haven’t slept well since we made the arrangements.

@twoinanddone if she flies into NY, does the try out and flies right back out, then you can go to NY. Even though CT and NJ have the same quarantine states and theirs is recommended versus enforced.

I went to Las Vegas (from Southern California, a 4 hour drive) for a tennis tournament a week ago. I brought my husband, who golfed while I played tennis. They were strict about masks. I stayed in Summerlin near the tennis courts at the JW Marriott. They take your temperature every time you walk in. I was afraid I wouldn’t pass after playing tennis in the heat (100 degrees) but I passed. They were strict about masks except in the restaurants. My friend, who goes to Las Vegas a lot, says that it is about 25% capacity. There was free parking everywhere. It felt good to get away.

Late to this thread, but I don’t think ShawWife or I are likely to fly before mid-2021 or later. Normally I fly several times a month for business and we take significant vacations in Europe, the Bay Area (sometimes live there for a few months), Western Canada, and visit family in Canada and the East Coast. So a big change in our lives.

Our kids are flying in for Thanksgiving but will get tested after 3 days and will stay at an Airbnb for a few days until they test negative. We normally have a big Thanksgiving and invited ShawD’s BF and his mother and local family (plus a cousin or two of ours plus anyone else that might be alone). This year, we will celebrate a day early with just ShawSon, ShawD and BF. The ShawD and BF will go to his mother’s the next day. Her bubble is much bigger than ours. So, ShawD will only be staying with us one night, but will come back and visit us outside.

We may do something we’ve never done – drive to Florida in the winter. We always fly. ShawWife’s mother has a house in Florida and I’d love to be out of New England in February. This will rely in part on our confidence about COVID in the part of Florida where we’d stay. Alas, my perception is that the governor of Florida has politicized data collection, so we may not be able to get comfortable that the data are accurate, but we’ll need to research. Maybe they are now reporting accurate data. What a weird world we live in.

She needs to be there 3 days or so. It doesn’t work to fly 4.5 hours, get to the facility on Long Island, try out, and then escape within the 24 hour limit.

I don’t think they care about making the accommodations for the 5-8 girls living in the ‘bad’ states. I know one is in Florida (BAD) and one is at Cornell (good) and I don’t know where the other ~12 are. The initial cuts were made by video so maybe they’ll do that again.

It is what it is. I think the most likely is for Colorado to come off the bad list or she doesn’t go. They could pick a state that NY likes and then the NYers could go to that state and the NYers wouldn’t have to quarantine when they return, but then it costs more for the NYers to travel (everyone would be traveling). NY seems to like California now so everyone could fly there.

Even if they picked NJ, they are not as strict to follow , as they call it “quarantine guidelines”, and the NYers could easily do it.
