@creekland, my husband and I had to run an errand last Sunday around noon that took us on the airport loop road around BWI. Normally, we would avoid the airport the Sunday after Thanksgiving but figured there wouldn’t be much traffic. It was almost eerie to see the completely empty (and some closed) long term parking lots. There was virtually no one on the road and only a couple of cars turning into the airport. I vividly recall the Sunday after Thanksgiving four years ago, when D21 had a 6:20am flight out of BWI going back to college. Even at that hour, traffic was nuts. While on the one hand, we were glad that there was zero traffic b/c it meant most people were following recommendations not to travel. But on the other, so sad knowing the reason why!
We’ve decided not to even attempt to rebook our Scotland vacation for '21. Hopefully Fall of '22 will be a go!
We hope to be able to do a domestic trip that will not require a flight.
Yeah, definitely mixed emotions. I’ve been trying here to get “unaffected” others to donate more than they usually do to various causes rather than just pocketing all of their Covid savings (and donating like a regular year). To me, that’s common decency - sharing so we all can make it through, not just being pleased to be in the “unaffected” group. Apparently at least some others never thought about doing it.
Hmm, maybe I’ll put a post on the Say It Here thread. It came up again this morning, so it fits. I want to scream at some people who don’t give a hoot about those who have been hit hard assuming, “there are gov’t programs.” Yes, there are, but they don’t do enough nor cover everything. Or they could send extra to their federal/state/local gov’t to help the deficit there I suppose.
I think there will be a huge rush of travel bookings for summer, maybe late summer, once the vaccine is available. There is so much pent up demand.
@momofboiler1 We visited Scotland as a family a few years ago. You’ll love it. If you have not visited before, feel free to PM any questions. I can “re-live” our experience that way
It will be our third trip to Scotland! I just love everything about it!
We were planning on doing the North Coast 500 and the Orkney Islands on this trip.
My two are on the train to CA. When they texted me they had a pic of themselves in the observation car. There is only one other person in the entire car - an Amish gentleman.
I’ll admit to being amazed that they can even afford to run the train if more don’t get on elsewhere. I’m not sure how many opted for sleeper cars or other areas.
A couple flew to Kauai anyway after tested positive at San Francisco airport and told not to board the plane. They were arrested upon arrival.
Yeah, too many members of our human species are just plain dumb and inconsiderate putting it mildly. If we didn’t have folks like that chances are this pandemic would have been stopped long ago.
@momofboiler1, We loved the North Coast of Scotland and the Orkney Islands. We took the ferry from John O’ Groats . Skara Brae and The Italian Chapel were fascinating. It was many years ago, but that driving trip all around Scotland is one of my favorites!
That’s a great train trip. One of our kids wanted that from CA to Massachusetts as a college graduation gift. She had a sleeper from CA to Chicago. She says it was the best gift!
I’d love to do that train again. I did Chicago to Denver…and it was terrific.
Maybe…next year??
@thumper1 We’re getting gorgeous pictures from them. Definitely makes me wish I were with them. Someday. I also want to do the Orient Express and other great train trips.
I’m a train buff. When COVID is over I am going to take the train from MA to CA. I have taken many long distance train trips and even slept in the bubble car going through the Canadian Rockies with a full moon. A peak experience, no pun intended!
Our family loves train travel. For many years we took the auto train from VA to FL when we traveled to Disney. For a cross country trip (mostly visiting National parks in the midwest/west) we took a train from Boston to Denver (our start and end point). It was such a great trip. The train trips that cross Canada look fun too.
Have to decide in a few weeks if we are going to travel to CA for an extended time. They are back in lockdown mode now
Yeah, my two just went there to be with DIL’s family for 6 weeks. They don’t really plan to be tourists other than maybe some outdoor hikes.
I look forward to being able to truly travel again - experiencing everything we want to in places we go.
@compmom did you know that when your user profile is private, no one can send you a PM?
I’d like to share some info with you but would prefer not to do it here…about train travel.
@thumper1 I didn’t know my user profile was private. I’ll try to fix it so you can PM me!
I officially have our flight refund from SAS via JustFly credited to my credit card now! Never thought I’d see that money TBH. We ended up only losing $35 on that cancelled trip - a fee to JustFly to apply for the refund.
But I still want to go to Germany/Poland (sigh). Someday.
that sounds so marvelous! My husband and I did a road trip just the two of us through MA and the New England area a few months ago and stopped to camp at places! I would love to see the Canadian Rockies one day when it is safe to travel out of the country again!!
