What are your thoughts about travel in the time of Covid?

Not all Marriotts are equipped to allow the door to be opened by the app. A lot of Marriotts are owned by franchisees and set their own rules as to minimum ages. We used to have to call multiple Marriotts when my son would drive home from college when he was under 21. There could be two Marriotts side by side and one would allow under 21 and one would not. We had more success if spouse (a titanium member) made the reservation and then advised his son would be checking in.

When D2 was 17 she was stranded at EWR because she missed her connecting flight. I called ahead to a hotel at the airport and she was able to check in with no problem.

My D travelled for work before she was 18 with no problems at hotels. Marriott will rent to over 18 and yes, even under 18 can get a room with a parent calling.

We just flew to see our daughter on United. No issues and both our flights were actually early.

The AA app on our phones showed that our bags went out on an early morning flight from PHL-PHX on Sunday morning. It was not one of the flights that we could choose from when we re-booked immediately after the cancellation. So our bags went on a 6:00 am flight and we followed on a flight that left about 12:20 pm. Given the long lines at the baggage claim center in PHX, that type of thing must’ve happened with a lot of people.

As for the reasons for the cancellations, AA blamed it on gusty winds at DFW on Thursday that supposedly created a domino effect that meant that AA didn’t have the right flight crews in the right places to staff the flights. The chaos continued today and over 2000 flights were cancelled since Friday. More travel chaos for American Airlines as over 300 flights canceled Monday

My mom canceled her flight with American on Wednesday. She was just too nervous she would be stranded.

Now for a frustration

My mom wants to be independent. But why won’t she let me book her trips? She booked through Expedia. Why? I don’t know. She thinks she doesn’t have an account there either and she doesn’t remember how to click on a hyperlink. And now she has travel credit with Expedia instead of a refund. Sigh!

My wife is overseas dealing with a family emergency and I am hoping to join her soon. In order to travel I need a regular PCR test (i.e., not rapid) with a QR code (I think Hawaii might also require this?). Has anyone done this and if so where did you get it done?

It is frustrating as the country does not even require the QR code, just suggests it and says it will be quicker, but Lufthansa interprets it to say it is required. My wife was initially prevented from leaving the US but Lufthansa finally let her go as she still has citizenship there…I only have US citizenship.

Walgreens has FAQ on their website that discusses the QR code but when you ask them they say they do not do it plus the website says it does not provide a QR code. It is very difficult to find someone that actually knows anything…

Thanks for reading!

I thought they only needed to be over 18 to stay in a hotel. I booked a room for my D for a trip last year (she was just 18) at a Marriott and she had no issues checking in/paying.

I’ve had an alert set on fares to Key West for April for some time. Fares have been astronomical. All of a sudden they are very reasonable - all on AA. I guess they’re trying to do damage control after this weekend?

What airport do you fly into for Key West? My brother has a place in Islamorada - I thought they usually fly into Miami???

@yearstogo did you check (or do you have) CVS??? They seemed on top of things when we needed certain tests/proof for the Canadian border. Other suggestion would be to check with a respected urgent care that does testing - though you might have to pay for the test.

Whether it’s required in a country or not, the QR code is likely country-specific (therefore, app-specific). No pharmacy (or other places) in the US is likely to be able to provide it. You need to contact the embassy/consulate of that country and provide them with the proof and they should be able to give you directions on what app to use and how to generate the QR code.

We usually fly into Miami and then drive down, but rental car prices are insane, too, so we have decided to just fly direct to Key West.

Thanks.

I just found a lab that is about 2.5 hours away that can provide the PCR with QR code. Once I get to the country, I feel pretty sure I can get in…I have to get Lufthansa to allow me to board and if I have a QR code that works here in the US that will suffice.

It is a former Soviet country and trying to deal with the embassy, etc will be very cumbersome. I feel very confident about getting in once I arrive. If the issue was on the country side there, I could sort it, but it is with Lufthansa taking a very strict interpretation of their guidance.

Ahh, didn’t know that flying into Key West was an option! My brother has a vehicle at their residence - I think they used some car service or Uber type situation to get from Miami airport to their place.

Islamorada is further up the keys (a bit closer to Miami than KW), so it makes sense they would fly into MIA.

I know when I went to CR a few weeks ago I uploaded my vaccine status and that created a QR code, and I would think somehow that could be done with a PCR test, but it looks like you found what you needed. I wonder if the airport you are flying out of might have suggestions as well.

It varies by chain and specific location. Especially with hotels that have a minibar in the room, they are more likely to require age 21. The Marriott website says the minimum age varies by hotel. Marriott Bonvoy Customer Service and Online Help

My son lives overseas in an Eastern European city that is now under code red lockdown. Needs vax documentation to get on the subway, etc. He came back to the US to get his vax this summer, but has no QR code, which is required in his city, subject to a significant fine. So far, they have accepted the email. He’s trying to get the QR code, but he used a burner SIM card while he was here this summer, so now has no access to the phone number where the code was sent. Has been getting nowhere with the health dept back here. Is trying to find a way to get the QR code locally by presenting his docs to the authorities.

@CountingDown -If the vaccine site your son used has his email when he registered, have him check on VAMS site to see if he can find and download his vaccine info.
