What are your thoughts about travel in the time of Covid?

I think the best plan is just to be flexible. When we went on our train trip back in August we got to Plan E and none of it was due to Covid. There were weather and fire issues, coupled with train interactions. It was still a great trip (mostly), but if we had worried about not getting Plan A I guess it would have been stressful.

I guess this is why we’re working through some Plan B and C scenarios in case we need them.

This is really trivial in the overall scheme of things but Harold Hill is a very difficult role and most cannot do it. You need a big personality and a certain “brass” to your persona. I don’t think it’s the kind of role that is easily understudied. I saw The Music Man on Broadway in 2001 when Robert Sean Leonard took over from Craig Bierko. RSL is a very good actor (Dr. Wilson on House, Dead Poet’s Society, etc.) but he just does not have the brass to play Harold Hill. The ultimate Harold was Robert Preston. Hugh Jackman was great in The World’s Greatest Showman; he’s got the right persona to do this role justice.

Our daughter is in Mexico. Went to Cabo for a wedding. Called me this morning saying she felt sick and was in so much pain she couldn’t get out of bed. Went to the ER. COVID negative but likely has appendicitis. Just talked to the surgeon. They are trying antibiotics but may need to do surgery. Debating whether I need to fly to Mexico. She’s all alone there. Oy!

So sorry, how nerve wracking.

Everyone else from the wedding left?

If it’s appendicitis, don’t let that go too long if it’s bad. I’ve seen a bad outcome when it was left too long. If the surgeon suggests taking it out, I’d follow it. Mexico was a medical tourism country in the past so it’s not like they are third world.

What @Creekland said! A CT scan would easily tell how bad it is. I’m so sorry…

Is she at an American hospital? If she is going to have a surgery, I would be there. Look into your insurance coverage to see if you are covered for medical transport and what king of overseas medical insurance you have. I would call your daughter’s insurance company to let them know your daughters situation.
I lived in Mexico for few years. There is a big difference between a local hospital vs American or international hospital.
When I traveled to Thailand with my two adult daughters, one of them got sick and had to go to a hospital. I had them take her to their international hospital. I called our insurance company to get their approval. They treated it as in network and there was no out of pocket for me.

She says it’s an American Hospital. They made her put $2000 on her credit card  before they’d admit her. She called us about an hour ago and said they are doing the surgery tonight. I have to hope it all goes well. I booked a flight to Cabo and I’ll stay with her there until she’s well enough to fly back to LA. If it’s not one thing, it’s another….

Thanks for your Good wishes. I don’t think I’ll sleep well tonight…

Oh my! Safe travels. Hope the surgery is uneventful! If the surgery is laparoscopic, she should spring back in no time. My husband had this, and he was flying to his headquarters a week after surgery! She can’t lift anything heavy though for quite a while.

Hugs!!!

She will be fine at an American hospital. It’s a minor surgery. Wishing her a speedy recovery.

All should go well. I fully understand your worries though and wish you uneventful travel - and uneventful recovery for her. Take care. :hugs:

Hoping this all goes smoothly. Good you can get there. She will be happy to see you!!

Best wishes to @Mom0f3 it’s much easier when it’s not your kid. May all go well with her recovery and your travels.

We got home ourselves a bit ago. It went fine. Our gate changed three times! But well before we had to board so not a big deal. And we had an odd TSA security guy barking orders. Since when do snacks have to be out of the carryons? And all kinds of rules what must be out and in of bins and what can’t be touching what. The poor ladies in front of us were so confused and took forever.

Now just cross our fingers the next few days that all stays well on the covid front. Younger S’ GF’s family all just tested positive. They are up in the northeast. She was going to come visit us next week for the first time so that is a big bummer

Best wishes for @Momof3.

The TSA always yells at us. We have not flown since 2020, but we flew frequently. I count on being yelled at so I expect the drama. I have been yelled at for having a breakfast bar in my bag instead of out of it. I read the signs and there is no mention of it. I said oh, is that new?..mistake. He said no it has always been that way! I really needed to not talk and smile and nod instead.

Wow—have never had to separate snacks from rest of luggage—ever. Weird! I never have been yelled at by tsa either. Those would be confusing to me as well. I had been flying about 30,000 miles/yr thru 2019.

Reminds me of one scene from that movie… Glad travel went (almost) fine for you.

Heck, flying these days is just like that movie!

Food out of carryon for TSA inspection has been the rule for a while… if we fly with any food items, I just check the bag. Not worth the TSA hassle!

I guess we’ve been global entry awhile and everything gets to stay in the bag.

I have a similar issue. Immuno compromised father is scheduled for surgery next week and I want to be there for him (he has no one else nearby). I’m terrified of giving him Covid. I am going to rapid test before leaving to see him and will wear a KN95 mask around him when there and stay in an area of the house where he doesn’t go.
