What are your thoughts about travel in the time of Covid?

We knew that the antibody tests are not completely reliable, but when my S and DIL both tested positive we knew the odds that they are accurate are pretty darn good. Nobody seems to know the reliability of a single test. Having to go another year or more without seeing our only grandson at 2 1/2 would have been pretty rough. Their visit is the only risk at all we have taken, and we consider it pretty minor given the circumstances. Neither my husband nor I have been inside a store in about 3 months. Our local supermarket chain (HEB) has excellent curbside service, as does any other store I need or want something from.

@JustaMom5465 right this minute, a negative Covid test does not take the place of the quarantine in CT. But the governor has said he wants to look into that as a possibility.

The issue I see is…the incubation period is a little longer possibly. So you could have a negative test today and come up with the virus in 10 days. This is the reason for the 14 day quarantine if coming from a hot spot…at least that is my understanding.

My son called tonight. He and his wife are going to visit this weekend. They’ve been really good about staying in and wearing masks. And I’m thrilled to finally see one of my kids! Certain to help my mood

@deb922

So happy for you!

I live 15 minutes from our local airport via car but the planes if they aren’t obeying the takeoff and landing procedures fly over my yard. It had been pretty quiet but over the last week I’ve noticed a lot more air traffic. I’m assuming less flights are being canceled. I’ve also noticed an upturn in what appears to be private jets.
I was planning an October Italy trip which isn’t happening. My sister recommended a mother and D in Italy who I’ve been following on Instagram. I’m loving seeing the country via their posts. I can’t wait to be able to travel again. I just hope that Covid 19 isn’t the first of these worldwide viruses and this doesn’t become our new normal.

@newpreironic I am really really hoping more reliable antibody tests start becoming available. It would be so helpful.

One of my DDs has a baby under 6 months old, she’s been going crazy 800+ miles from us. A few weeks ago, she got a ride halfway, took her own food, no public stops, not even bathrooms- it was rural so they found non public places to go. She touched nothing and no one. DH drove halfway and met them and picked up DD & baby.

She visited for two lovely weeks. We had already been quite safe so she was not worried about us. Frontline DD lives two hours away and works in the medical field (ED.) She did a brain swab, was negative, and came to visit. Being aware she could still have picked up the virus, she never came inside our house, we ate outside and she slept at the empty second home of a nice neighbor. It all felt pretty safe. DD got back home the same way and took her own C19 test, also negative. It was a marvelous trip for her and the baby. I had not thought about it, but the poor baby was actually bored at his house as that and walks are the only places he goes. Here he got to see all sorts of new stuff, like a dog, and new surroundings. DD found him to be quieter and more content. He was just busy taking in all the new stuff. It’s strange to think about all the little kids who are not being exposed to the great big world.

After completely quarantining for March and most of April, we decided to include our local DD and her family, then, over time we added the other kids. That is plenty of exposure risk, it actually comes to us from them, we are still not seeing anyone. It’s the kids who each have one careful adult in their home who works outside the home.

Our DD moved to Seattle to get a job, which she got, but it was working remotely. She came home because of the COVID shutdown. She thought her office was going to reopen and she needed to check her apartment after two months, so she drove back. After 3 weeks there (completely isolated from everyone, groceries delivered), she drove home again. She said that it was interesting to see A) much more traffic, B) many fewer people with masks in Oregon than WA or CA and C) it took her 4 tries to find a service station with a bathroom she could use.

my DH and I are going to drive to a national park where we have a back country reservation which (fingers crossed) is still open. We intend to eat our own food in the car during the 22 hr drive, but bathrooms could be a problem. We are stopping to see my Dad who lives with my brother, wife and daughter. Dad is social distancing because he never goes out, but brother’s family is attending church, social events, and visiting with their older daughters, one of whom is a physical therapist who kept working. No one there wears masks. I am worried about bringing something in to my dad, but I haven’t seen him for almost a year. He’ll be 92 soon so I need to see him as often as possible. Wish things were still heading down or stable instead of ramping up.

DH also has a procedure scheduled in LA, which was cancelled in March. And now news is that the hospitals in LA are reaching capacity so in 4 weeks it will probably be cancelled again. It isn’t life threatening, but it would be really good to get it done.

LOL…remember that thread “What is your superpower?”

CT now has 16 states where they are asking travelers from to self quarantine for 14 days when they arrive here…or return here from any of those states. That’s up from 9 last week.

Someone upstream asked why CA wasn’t on the list. It is now.

This could make travel dicey for those (like me) with plans in August. I can self quarantine, but my husband is an essential worker, and that would be hard. If Colorado gets added to the list, we won’t be traveling there.

Go Alaska. Ban the jerks.

That is great news, but how many people will be claiming a medical exemption?

From the article: “As with most airlines, the mask policy won’t apply to those with a medical condition or disability making it difficult to breathe with or remove the mask, or to children aged 2 and under.”

Will this become like the ESA issue, and abused?

People claiming medical exemption should indicate such when purchasing tickets. They should be seated together in the same section (back of the plane?) with each other.

I like your idea of seating all the medical exemptions in the same section!

MA just dropped the 14-day quarantine requirement for visitors from NJ, NY, CT, RI etc. so we are driving up next week to see our daughter who lives in Cambridge. We having dinner with her and her fiance outside. We are bringing them some furniture and cooking equipment they need for their new apartment. NJ does not require a quarantine if you’re coming from MA so we are good in that department. It is a long round trip though. Hotels are open nearby after being closed for a while and I am tempted to stay the night. $130 a night during the week, very cheap (not surprised).

What if you had a tank of O2 via nasal canula that you wore under your mask with you for the duration of the flight? Would that make it possible to fly?

@creekland, I called justfly.com again today and they still couldn’t tell me anything about the refund on our canceled Paris-Boston flight (they had promised me they would be able to tell me something by June 25). So I called CapitalOne and disputed the original airfare cost plus the $70 handling fee. They are going to give me a credit immediately while they’re investigating. I don’t think there will be any issues - we’ve disputed a few similar items in the past.

What would you do -
We have a bicycling trip currently scheduled for early October (It starts the 4th or 6th).
We canceled our “summer” vacation, but we are still hoping we can go to Vermont in October (Lake Champlain Valley fall foliage bicycling tour, schedule to stay in small inns).
We are coming up on 3 months out, and MY GUESS (I just started thinking about this today) is we can get some money back if we cancel 90 days out.
We have no insurance on THIS trip, and it wouldn’t do any good anyway.

I just looked, and we lose 35% of our purchase price if we cancel 91 days out.
We are right about there.

How many people on the tour @1214mom ? How will you travel to get to your destination? If restaurants aren’t open will that be a big negative for your trip?

I sort of feel like anything for the next several months is a risk depending on the factors.

I don’t envy the decision making.
