@Rivet2000 My husband was quite pleased with the U-haul rental. The van had only 8,000 miles on it and was spotlessly clean. It was a round trip rental from CT to NC and the total was around $500, (seemed to be a special deal). It got excellent gas mileage and rode smoothly. They drove non stop- about 10 hours.
@ECmotherx2 Thanks for the info
We are staying home. The furthest we drove was to the airport to drop off S (he had to fly back to his rental in VA to take care of packages which have been delivered to his home instead of where they were supposed to go, plus do his taxes.
Mostly we stay within 5 miles of our home. Our trips to grocery stores and Costco a few times/month are a big deal for us.
No idea when we will be able to travel again. Travel means flying 5+ hours, generally. Currently we have no interest. (Used to fly >30k/yr.)
I know. I just don’t know why their cases increased as much as it did. The same for CA. They didn’t open too soon, they closed down early, etc., unlike FL or TX. CA didn’t even fully open and yet they became a hotspot. Where did that come from?
^maybe they went on vacation and brought it back? As I feared, that’s what’s happening in my area. Technically, our state (VA) is doing ok, but my area increased their number of cases by 33% last week. Nobody has been willing to give up their annual trip to Myrtle Beach. Of the people who go on vacation in my city, I’d estimate 50-60% go to the Myrtle beach area and another 1/3 to another Carolina Beach.
Younger S’ friend and co-worker came back home yesterday from Myrtle beach with a fever. No test/result yet, but I’d be surprised if it was something else. He was supposed to go back with his GF’s family next week though GF was with his family last week. What a mess
^^^ It’s simple. People becoming more mobile and stretching or not abiding by precautions. No masks in places like bars. Graduation parties. Anything summer that gathers people. More traveling and doing the same - bars, parties, not SD, not masking. In Ohio, the “red” (level 3 out of 4 in intensity) include most urban counties and some that are not urban as well.
Ohio was seeing some really good progress/flattening. And then Memorial Day weekend came and people apparently ran out of patience for staying safe.
Our trip to Wisconsin and Minnesota went well. Air travel felt save to me. The three planes we were on (Sun Country and then two legs on American) were half-full or emptier. It was clear that passengers HAD to wear masks. American made multiple announcements that anyone not complying would be removed from the plane and not allowed to travel with the company in the future. The only time I was nervous was when we had to walk through a crowd at a gate in Philadelphia - there was no way around it. I couldn’t believe all those people had no problem being packed together like that! Yikes.
People in rural Wisconsin don’t seem to realize there’s a pandemic going on. Very few masks.
We have to quarantine until we get tested and get the results. I need to see when the place opens.
H and I ventured out of town yesterday for about the first time since March, other than one day when I went to my office in Manhattan, driven by my son. We went to a family party. H and I were the only ones masked. I was very nervous the entire time we were there and stayed about one hour. I don’t think I will breathe easy for another two weeks. I know that we were on private property where masking isn’t required, but there were too many people there for my comfort.
My D wants me to visit her in her new home out West but the train is 50+ hours each way and I am reluctant to fly. I don’t think I will be visiting her.
This, all day. ![]()
If you can’t get the result back soon, you could jus quarantine. If the test takes a week to come back, you don’t save much time by testing.
My H had a test at a local CVS and had the results in about 3 days. Super easy.
Mentioning this just because I don’t think some people realize that some drugstores are testing.
I’ve read recently that the CVS results are no longer as quick. All the labs are backed up everywhere.
H’s was last week. But certainly they could get overwhelmed on a dime.
My employee (I only have 3!) got a call his Mother is dying in central Mexico. Their culture is You Have to Go. He wouldn’t listen to anything I tried to explain. There is a long list of issues. First, Mexico is trying to be strict keeping Americans out but he has a Mex passport. I had to get him a flight out of Tijuana and he’ll have to get across the border walking over a bridge directly into the airport.
He just thinks “I’ll get a test and then show everyone the paper”. Of course he doesn’t have a computer to research or make an appointment. I had to give him a list of places open on the weekends, but the majority of places required physician referral or symptoms. He just did not understand he was going to have to wait 3 days for results, he thought it was instant and he would have a piece of paper. Meanwhile the lines were so long at every place he just gave up. There’s basically no place to get a test without symptoms or doctor referral. Have no idea why our local government keeps announcing plenty of testing.
All I can do at this point is force him to quarantine away from work when he gets back. He will not be happy because it’s not like he’s in a cushy desk job working from home. He’s basically going to lose 2 weeks income
@coralbrook If he’s a good employee why not help out on the pay side?
He’s a very good employee but we are all without work right now. We will work something out somehow.
H told me last night that one of his employees waited 18 days for test results in TX. Four days longer than his quarantine.
D returns sooner than expected from her coop from a hot bed area in early August so she has a full 14 days to quarantine before going back to school.
DD left this morning to go visit her husband in the DR she hasn’t seen in 6 months. She got a deal on a first class ticket, stocked with face masks, hand sanitizer, and wet ones. His green card interview has been delayed indefinitely. It’s been 18 months now they have been going through this. I understand her need to go see him. They are taking all precautions. Airbnb has been empty and cleaned. He shopped for their groceries and they will stay in. Not visiting the family on this trip. Her company has said she does not have to quarantine when she returns, just monitor temperature and symptoms. She is monitoring temp while she is there too.
THIS…and add to that what seems to be the prevailing attitude of “Real world problems may not intrude on my vacation.”
We have a beach house about 30+ mi south of MB. Made the trip down there in June to check in. We were astonished at 1) the sheer number of people there this year and 2) the number of folks who seem to be taking no precautions whatsoever. It’s no wonder their stats are terrible. We didn’t go anywhere but house, beach, grocery store - socially distanced and masked.
I know a family who lives near Hilton Head. As soon as they could, they piled into their camper and went to Myrtle Beach. I just ??♀️ At that one. They have a beach that is very nice near their Hilton Head place. I just didn’t get the “need” for them to travel to MB.
Friends who live near MB are staying home.
