What are your thoughts about travel in the time of Covid?

I’m not interested in an RV with a bathroom and kitchen. H and I camp in our tent which is very comfy and we have a camp stove and all the cooking stuff if we want to cook. I would just want an RV to sleep in. H really likes all the vans you can buy then spend another $30K to deck it out with the bed and all the storage inside. If we do decide to get an RV I think we might go for a tear drop trailer at some point!

You could hipcamp that bad boy when you’re not using it! https://www.hipcamp.com/

There is a company, Harvest Hosts that you can camp in your RV at different locations for free. Over 1100 sites nationwide such as wineries, breweries and farms. They only ask that you consider purchasing something from the host, such as a bottle of wine or beer or some farm produce.

And there is a ton of BLM land that is free to camp, but has no facilitates. Perfect!

We bought a 20 ft trailer last fall pre Covid. We considered a Sprinter type of van but that is a huge investment. We have always been tent campers which I was fine with. I could have gone with a teardrop but my H wanted a bit larger. Plus teardrop trailers are pretty expensive for the size. One thing we considered was that we already had a vehicle to pull a trailer. We also got a size that we could park on our property. We did one short trip last November and have a trip planned in a few weeks of 7 nights. That trip is a mix of RV parks and 4 nights at a Ca state park. We had to go with the RV parks for the way up and way back since many public campgrounds were full or not yet open. We will also do a Eastern Sierra Nevada trip in Sept. that trip will all be US Forest service campgrounds.

@ Creekland look for charter boat companies that use individual owners boats. Years ago we chartered a catamaran from TMM in the BVI and also Belize which were owner boats. Have also chartered owner boats in Pacific NW. companies like Sunsail and Moorings have programs but I’m not sure how they work.
@CottonTales have you used Harvest Hosts?

We originally liked just the camper van idea with a minimal bathroom, but then Covid happened and I’d like the option to have a small shower if we want one, being able to totally avoid the bathhouse.

We’ve tent camped up to now - and loved it - so we still want small. The B+ seems to be a good compromise with having a shower and still being able to go (fit into) places.

We have friends who are Harvest Host members (there is something about joining, I think). They have stated at some really neat places. They say it’s well worth looking into.

@mom60, I haven’t used Harvest Hosts before, I came across it when researching used RV’s and van builds. If you sign up for their emails they will send you a discount code. IIRC, the price is somewhere around $79 for the year.

DH was looking online last night and noticed that the cruise around the Hawaiian Islands is again taking reservations…Norwegian Cruise Lines. Their website looks like these cruises are resuming now. The reservations are open until the end of 2021. We would not consider this until fall 2021 or so.

Is this really happening??

Right now Hawaii is on our list of states where we have to quarantine for 14 days when we return from there…added to the list this week.

@HImom what’s happening there?

Not HImom, but seeing HI added surprised me too. They’re the best of the 51 states (+ DC) listed for stats, so what I imagine happened was their very low numbers make the percentage increase seem phenomenally large and the states have a “formula” rather than a human looking at reality. Even per capita they are second lowest (to VT) in total cases and lowest of everyone in deaths. For new cases they’re 12th lowest, but I don’t see that listed per capita and am too lazy to do the math myself.

But… if one solely looks at two week trends (what many formulas do) their going from mid 20s in new cases the end of July to over 120s or so in August gives them a super high increase rate. The fact that most states are well over 120 in general for many days is meaningless because they’re “holding steady” or perhaps decreasing.

HI is seeing an uptick of cases.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: Iglooo has been issued a one-week timeout, not a permanent ban, for TOS violations. Please remember that moderation is not to be discussed on the public forums.

I’m not sure if this was mentioned above but Hawaii has increased their lockdown. Due to a sudden surge in cases, they have stopped all inter-island travel, very stringent on entry with quarantines and beaches are closed. Not sure about the outdoor restaurants. You can only walk across the beach to surf, paddle, swim, but noone is allowed to sit or stay on the beaches.

I believe the tourist entry was postponed to Sept and that is still not confirmed yet.

At least a few have estimated HI to have 1 in 50 people with COVID infections. We have 18 confirmed contract tracers and several days if triple digit new covid cases. It’s very concerning. The new lockdown has closed beaches and parks again, trying to get new infections back down. Restaurants are also back to take out only, I believe.

Hopefully our state and island will get things under better control soon, but who knows? No firm date as to when people will be allowed into our state without 14-day quarantine. :frowning:

Thank you @HImom

I also hope your state manages this well. Stay safe.

It’s scary reading this and realizing this is one of the US’s better states numbers-wise.

Yes, my sister’s workplace (the BCBS which covers 75% of our state) had 11+ people on her floor diagnosed with COVID. Our nearest Costco had 2 people diagnosed with Covid! I’m staying a hermit. :frowning:

Now and for the next couple of months definitely seems to be the time to take cover from the tidal wave. Schools opening seem like they will add another layer to the spreading. (Society reopening already added one.)

Maine is still the second best state in the country, behind Vermont. I don’t think we will go anyplace else for awhile.

Wasn’t Maine testing discussed on Twiv? That they only count positives in Maine as positives with a Maine address. I think Fl did something like that. See how that turned out. Imagine if the colleges do this. There seem to be plenty of Maine media stories about the obvious undercount.
