Much of that stuff comes from China, and the supply lines are down. All stores - Costco, IKEA, Walmart, Target- are low on inventory.
It is still strange to me how certain products can be out of stock while similar ones are fully stocked. This week it was elbow macaroni, but there were all the other types. One day it was pineapple.
Our Target has been really badly stocked too. I was just there with D before she left and we couldn’t even find basic things, like a soap dish. It will be interesting to see if they have their regular back to school stock up this year.
This is a little off topic to travel…but where I am, students are not permitted to bring supplies from home to school. Some schools are not even allowing backpacks. I can’t see any reason here to do back to school shopping except to have some things at home.
Back to travel…I just don’t understand the folks who are vacationing right now…less than two weeks before students return to school. Many are posting pictures from places that are on our required quarantine list. Betting they have no intention of doing the 14 day quarantine.
Also, visitors from the hot spot states that people bring to picnics and shopping and the like. We have friends whose kids traveled here from Texas and I think they were offended when i said I wouldn’t see my friends right after these kids visit. Sorry…I don’t need to take that risk.
Minnesota reports another 7 cases related to Sturgis for a total of 22.
There are at least 7 cases in Nebraska, 7 in North Dakota, Wisconsin has reported 2
Just great. We’re leaving for MN in less than 2 weeks. We’re driving instead of flying. Staying in a hotel with windows that open instead of with my 87 yr. old mother. Attending an outdoor wedding and skipping the indoor reception.
@toledo we have been in MN for about three weeks now. We drove from VA to MN in two days, sleeping in the car once. It’s weird where we are- there is absolutely universal mask compliance and people keep their distance, but on our new community’s fb page I see a lot of people who are angry about the rules and disbelieving in general that the pandemic is a real issue.
This New York Times article, “5 Things We Know About Flying Right Now,” includes a discussion of a mathematical model which concludes:
“He [Arnold Barnett, a statistician and professor of management science at Massachusetts Institute of Technology] found that on a fully loaded flight, the chance of contracting Covid-19 was one in 4,300. If the middle seat is empty, the risk falls to one in 7,700. Taking into account the possibility of spreading the virus to others not on the plane, he estimated the death risk to be one per 400,000 passengers on full flights and one in 600,000 with open middle seats.”
The article also states, “To date, no super-spreading events have been traced to a flight.”
I agree with whoever said the problem was teens and 20’s aged people. Yesterday I traveled as far as the local park. Scores of young men were playing basketball without a mask in sight. And they were guarding (if that’s the right word) in each other’s faces.
We traveled to Yellowstone in June. Lodging in the park had just opened and the park was very empty. For July, however, the NPS reports that visitation is up over July, 2019.
So as of yesterday, there were 53 cases in connection with the indoor wedding in Millinocket, Maine that 65 people attended. One of the attendees infected another woman who DIED. One report I read stated that the bride and groom were from California, but I’m not sure it’s true since I haven’t read that anyplace else. It is very upsetting.
To my surprise, our pastor sent out a notice that our church will be holding an outdoor gathering on September 13. ?!?!? I just sent him a polite note and asked him how they planned to restrict the gathering to 100 attendees, since that is the maximum permitted in Maine. The church has been very careful up to now, so I’m confused as to this decision.
A popular thing around here in the summer for a section of the population is outdoor old car shows. People park their vintage cars door to door in a reserved parking lot and oodles of people show up to walk and admire (?) the cars.
Was shocked to see one set up the other day. Cars were right on top of each other. Probably 100+ featured cars. Oodles of people there looking at the cars. Most people were 60+ in age. At a glance, 90+% were without masks.
Older people are also often who I saw mask less pre-required masks at the grocery store.
I say PLENTY of younger AND older people who choose to be non-compliant.
Agreed. In my area, the lack of masks & social distancing is not limited to young people. Nor is it in my family, as my BIL & SIL see no reason to wear masks when they visit my in laws - who are in their 90’s.
Maybe it’s different in other areas. I saw in today’s paper that Justin Bieber had a big party and guests were photographed arriving. No masks. (And parties are verboten as well).
@tatinG I really feel like I’m living in an alternate universe than so many people. Big parties? no masks? It is so disheartening to feel as though some of us are, metaphorically, holding a giant umbrella over people who don’t even realize it’s raining.
What’s infuriating is that it is common knowledge that masks do not protect the wearer, but protect others if the wearer is asymptomatic or has a mild case.
Those not wearing masks are flipping a figurative middle finger at society, telling us all that they “don’t care if I infect you or not”. Some act like not wearing a mask makes them a tough guy—what it does make you is an idiot.
Compares to having the right to kill yourself by smoking, but you DO NOT have the right to kill ME with your second hand smoke.
@MaineLonghorn Our church has had outdoor service for a few weeks in big field. For the first few weeks you had to register if you wanted to come. If you did you had two options - park and listen on FM channel from car or park and walk (with mask) to your own square marked out on ground. Could take mask off in square. A little overly cautious but also no hymn singing or lots of liturgy. Church has flatbed trailer set up as stage and had a few singers performing.
Now in a couple of weeks we will add inside service, restricted to 100 (prob holds 500) that will have to register to control numbers. Livestream will remain option as it was before covid.
This is how I feel. And these “mah rahts and mah freedomz” covidiots are prevalent where I live. Risk yourself – why, go right ahead and do that. But if it affects others, it is not okay. I am really changing my opinion of a lot of people I know.
Update about Sturgis https://www.startribune.com/revved-by-sturgis-rally-covid-19-infections-move-fast-far/572209322/
…An analysis of anonymous cell phone data from Camber Systems, a firm that aggregates cell phone activity for health researchers, found that 61% of all the counties in the U.S. have been visited by someone who attended Sturgis, creating a travel hub that was comparable to a major U.S. city…
…Health departments in four states, including South Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska and Wyoming, have reported a total of 81 cases among people who attended the rally. South Dakota health officials said Monday they had received reports of infections from residents of two other states — North Dakota and Washington. .
And then there is this charmer:
“I sat at a bar elbow-to-elbow with guys. No one was wearing masks,” said Stephen Sample, a rallygoer who rode back to Arizona last week.
He had visited a bar where health authorities later issued warnings — One-Eyed Jack’s Saloon — but said he had not had any COVID-19 symptoms. He discussed quarantining with his wife after he returned, but decided against it.
That’s sickening about the guy who returned to AZ. AZ was just today removed from our quarantine list. A surge would get them right back on…all due to selfish people
