What are your top five songs and bands

I’m from Boston and I knew all the other folks were, but I never knew that one.

@rjm2018 you are right on Pure Prairie League!

@LuckyCharms913 Speaking of Elvis Costello- I love Alison, my aim is true.

@rjm2018 I just watched the T’Pau video. Love those 80s videos! We have a 4 hour playlist already. The party involves costumes for those that are into it. Always a very fun evening! The music from that time evokes such great memories! This is a fun thread! Thanks @privatebanker

@bearpanther The “I Want it That Way” scene from Brooklyn Nine Nine was mentioned in The Washington Post last week. Watched that clip with my son–so funny!

@firstwavemom

I hope the Fixx and Laura Branigan’s “Gloria” make the cut!

I can remember being at parties at that age - hearing it makes it seem like yesterday.

Also the closing song at the college pub on thurs and Friday was always “reasons” by ew and fire. I can feel the sweat of the overheated and overcrowded room and no concerns but that very moment.

Shockingly, CeeLo Green does my favorite version of River. It’s on a Christmas album. Beautiful.

Slight variation with artist and album:

Boz Scaggs Dig
George Michael Older
Wham Fantastic
Steely Dan Gaucho
Donald Fagan Kamakiriad
Daryl Hall Soul Alone
Hall & Oates Xstatic
Depeche Mode Singles 81>98
Basia Time & Tide

Not much in the way of metal in this thread. But let me turn you guys on to something. The band is Sleep and the song is called “Dopesmoker”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hIw7oeZKpZc

It’s an hour-long drony, stony thing from the early nineties, but the band is still around and touring.

Another band I like from this same doom metal/stoner metal genre is the Japanese band Boris, who took their name from a Melvins song. The lead guitarist Wata says she was inspired to become a musician after watching and listening to David Gilmour in the Pink Floyd concert movie “Live at Pompeii” as a teenager. They’ve also been around for twenty-five years now and are still recording and touring.

I find that coming up with individual songs is much harder than coming up with artists or (I’m gonna date myself now) albums (remember those??). Also some individual songs are on specific recordings or are, in the case of live performances that I’ve been fortunate enough to have experienced, forever imprinted in my memory.

Also, in the realm of songs and artists, I am torn as to how to draw a distinction between writers and interpreters…If I were to cheat, I’d have to have two separate lists…

While the notion of a “concept album” is a strange one in the day of iTunes, Spotify, playlists and individual songs, I think that the genre held much merit.

So, for those of my generation on this thread, I’ll add to the mix: If you were stranded on a desert island with nothing but a phonograph (what a quaint notion!) and you could pick 5 albums, what would they be? It’s interesting to note that the categories of albums, individual songs and artists might not fully overlap (and the question arises as to whether it’s cheating to select a concert album, a double album, etc. (I draw the line at greatest hits and boxed sets – that’s definitely cheating –– especially if the artists are dead).

So, in answer to the original questions (5 songs and 5 artists) and the new question for those of us of a certain age (5 record albums), this is what I’ve got:

Songs:

California - Joni Mitchell
Cucurucucu Paloma - Caetano Veloso (heard live)
The Boxer - Simon and Garfunkel
Hallelujah - tossup between Leonard Cohen and Jeff Buckley
The Quest - Brian Stokes Mitchell

Artists

Joni Mitchell
Jaques Brel
The Grateful Dead
Mercedes Sosa
The Beatles

Albums

Miles of Aisles - Joni Mitchell and the L.A. Express
Europe '72 - Grateful Dead
Ne Me Quitte Pas - Jaques Brel
Tommy - The Who
Les Miserables - 10th Anniversary Concert Album

Enjoying Stop Making Sense on Amazon Prime Video right now.

Thank you for this thread @privatebanker !!!

My top songs change all the time. Currently

  1. Take Me to Church by Hozier
    2)Uprising by Muse
  2. Believer by Imagine Dragons
  3. High Hopes by Panic at athe Disco
  4. Black Parade by My Chemical Romance

Has anyone seen the documentary Believer about Imagine Dragons lead singer/ songwriter Dan Reynolds putting on a pro LGBT music festival in his native Utah. Reynolds who still considers himself a Mormon is really pushing for the church to change its views. The documentary is very interesting.

Heard it was very good. Saw a need video on it a few weeks ago.

My favorite bands/performers to listen to:

Bruce Springsteen, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Pat Benatar, the Beach Boys and (outlier) Lady Gaga.

Favorite songs:

Lover’s Concerto (How Gentle is the Rain) by the Toys
I would do anything for love (but I won’t do that) by Meatloaf
Don’t Worry Baby by the Beach Boys
Sherri Baby by Bruce Springsteen
Follow You Follow Me - Genesis (Phil Collins)

Those are the songs that tone deaf me will sing along to even if someone else is around.

@techmom99 Love meatloaf too.

My favorite line. If you guess the song.

“There ain’t no coupe de ville hiding at the bottom of a Cracker Jack box “

Do we even have coupe de villes or cracker jacks anymore? Would have to explain to my d22

Also nice southside shout out. Very fun concerts at the beach pavilion some years ago.

To answer the question about the five albums:

Bat Out of Hell by Meatloaf
Darkness on the Edge of Town - Springsteen
Yellow Brick Road - Elton John
The Cast album of Aida
The Cast Album of Grease

@privatebanker Love “Two out of Three ain’t Bad!”
