Why are you applying to boarding school and what appeals to you? Do you want to continue all of your ECs? Any deal breakers? Are you open to applying as a repeat 9th grader?
I wouldn’t want to repeat a year ideally. I would like to go to boarding school since my parents are moving and I don’t really want to go with them. I would like to continue football and rowing if possible. No deal breakers.
As long as you cast a wide enough net, you should end up with an acceptance. Read the “Hidden Gems” threads on the forum and it will give you a lot of options that you might not be aware of.
Some less selective, that are friendly to 9th grade admission, but still great schools if they are the right fit, are:
New Hampton would give you football and alpine skiing, but not rowing.
Proctor has football, skiing and rowing.
Tabor Football and rowing
Sheffield Academy has football, skiing and rowing.
I don’t really mind where it is and my only requirement for the athletics dept is that they have a football team, co-ed or not doesn’t matter nor does the dress code. I’m thinking of applying to Kent, Woodberry Forest, Episcopal, Georgetown Prep and Baylor
There are some schools that don’t have a football team. So see? You do have a deal breaker.
And “I don’t really mind” just indicates something isn’t a deal breaker. What you need to define is what, at least, your preferences are. It a lot easier to be genuinely enthusiastic than merely feigning it, and that in turn will help your application.
You could add St. Andrew’s Delaware to your list. Football and Rowing.
Only hesitation is why you think the teacher recs won’t be solid. I think that you might request a meeting with each teacher and ask them what you might do to improve your standing with them. Effort? Attitude? Group cooperation? These things will matter very much to an AO who is thinking about both academics and living in community. You will definitely need to be motivated to turn it around, if there is an issue. It’s never too late. Good luck.
My teacher’s comments (from my report cards) are half split between good and bad pretty much. In some classes I don’t like I’ll just zone out but in others I like I’ll do better (60s in some classes and 90s in others).
Some quotes from the report card from this term where: “I encourage x to use class time wisely to work through problems and to ask questions during lessons to seek immediate clarification” (Math) and “However, he has been late in submitting a number of assignments this term and he tends to be satisfied with the minimum level of quality in his written work”(English). Last year’s comments were much better though (90% Avg too)
Coach comments for football and teacher comments for social studies would be much better though.
That is going to be a problem at the more selective schools. As I said, wide net. Think about what you can bring to the community and if a change in environment would help you work on the weaknesses that are being pointed out by your teachers. With those comments and grades, they might really push for a repeat 9th grade year. I’d definitely look at schools like Proctor that do really well with kids that need hands on learning and attention to keep them focused.
I really encourage you to think about what you want your experience to look like and why you want to go to boarding school (other than not wanting to move). You are going to have to convince OAs that this is something you are invested in beyond playing sports.
I think you should think a little about why this is. You could have an undiagnosed learning difference. Or the teaching style at your school may just be at odds with the way you learn. There are many possible reasons. Finding why will help you find what you need, pedagogically, to be more successful.
Do you think I could get into schools like Kent, Loomis (long shot there) or St. Andrews in DE? Or should I consider some other schools on my list like Suffield, Avon etc
I agree that you will want to dig into the ‘why’ regarding your comments. BSs want motivated self-starters. There are lots of BS that will support learners, but they will want to understand the why? It is something that you will want to be prepared to address in interviews, essays and with the teachers. If it is just a lack of interest, that might be a flag as clearly there are other classes you are excelling at.There are tons of great schools that fit all different student profiles. You just need to dig in to articulate what has been working, what are the challenges, and what you need from a school environment to address them in addition to the want list e,g., football and rowing. Good luck
