What book have you re-read many times?

I will be rereading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, a novel by David Wroblewski about a mute boy and his dogs…an amazing book and I just finished it!

The Killer Angels. The only thing Hillary Clinton and I agree on - this is our favorite book.

Great book, Firebad. My S read it the first time when he was nine, and it remains one of his very favorites. He also was fanatical about the movie based on it (Gettysburg), and can recite long passages of speeches from it.

Garland - please give a one-word message to your S: “Bayonets!!”

I love this thread. What a pleasure to be reminded of my old favorites and to learn which books the CC parents & students are passionate about–I’ve added quite a few to my to-read list.

In 5th-6th grade I read National Velvet five times. (I always remember the exact number as five). I still occasionally re-read the ending and the last sentence or two always makes me cry.

In 8th grade I read Gone With the Wind for the first time. For a few years after that I re-read it so often that the binding split and the front cover came off. Boy was the movie a big disappointment (just like National Velvet, come to think of it).

For some years now the go-to book has been Pride & Prejudice. I often joke that I’m like Raymond–the Dustin Hoffman character in Rain Man–in the way he starts reciting the Who’s on First routine when he’s stressed by a situation. When I need comfort, I head straight for P & P! (Loved the last couple of film adapatations, btw).

mythmom, sounds like your dissertation would be interesting. I’d have to take the GR class Pass/No Pass and still keep my fingers crossed. :-)

When I met someone who said that he always finishes every book he starts, I gave him a copy of GR. … He never started it. lol

Mrs. Weasley, Hm. It probably doesn’t ruin his stats then. I absolutely love GR, but it’s really demanding for sure. There’s a Reader’s Guide to GR just like the one to Ulysses.

I read GR while in HS and taking calculus, which worked really well. Took me a month; I’m sure I missed a lot. My creative writing teacher, who thought we were all on the pretentious side (and I’m sure we were) saw me reading it and congratulated me (kind of snarkily) on moving ahead (we were all reading Vonnegut, Hesse, Kerouac, etc, at the time.)

My favorite of his might be Vineland. I tried to read the latest, Against the Day, but got stuck halfway through. Liked lots of it but ran out of energy. SAme happened with Mason and Dixon. I must be getting old.

Fun thread since I have been re-reading a lot lately, too.

I just re-read The Great Gatsby and I’m now re-reading Crime and Punishment. Interesting experiences both because I’m not the same person who read them so long ago. Next on my re-read cue: The Master and Margarita.

However, the books that I read every couple of years for the sheer fun of it: Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Dorothy Sayers’ Peter Wimsey series.

Mythmom, I re-read Unbearable last summer, and I’m ready to read it again. I really enjoy all of Kundera although, and I don’t know why, I have never read The Joke. And Ulysess! My failed 2008 resolution. I even bought the Teaching Company lectures to help me out, and I just kept (and keep) putting it off.

This is my first post to CC, but I want to say this thread is wonderful. I am constantly reminded of books I should read this summer and of new books to explore. Every so often I re-read the Anne of Green Gables series. I love to visit Narnia over and over. I am pulled to the young adult sections of the library in the summer. I think I need a re-read of Jane Austen now.

I actually reread Ulysses a few years back. It has its whole “unapproachable” rep–which is unjustified. I found the same thing with Dickens. These were popular books for a reason! They are fun to read.

Ulysses is mah-vellous on talking book read by a fine Irish actor. It is absolutely colloquial then and very easy to grok.
