What can be done with this Wake Forest prompt?

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “If I know your sect, I anticipate your argument.” Describe a time when your argument challenged a basic belief or viewpoint of your “sect.” (150 words or fewer)

To me, if you go against a basic belief or viewpoint from a sect, you are not part of that sect. How can I write about how I went against something I was not even part of to begin with?

You are trying to prove Emerson’s statement wrong. Basically, he’s saying ever member of a sect is indistinguishable from every other member. Obviously this is false. So give a counterexample to his point. Show Emerson that even though he may know your sect, he cannot fully anticipate your beliefs.

Are politics or religion OK to talk about?
