I’m currently a Junior, and working on getting my transcripts, essays and all that fun stuff together for next year.

One of my biggest questions has been what can I, exactly, put on an application as far as ec’s and other things go?

For example, I took the Duke TIP a year early, (6th grade) and scored higher than 33% of High School seniors taking it. Can my involvement with TIP go on my application, or is it too far back to count?

What about community service hours earned in middle school?

What about ec’s that happen later in the year (after applications are sent in) that I know I’ll be involved in? (Mock Trial, Relay for Life, etc.)

Also, I was born in Bermuda but did not attend High School there/will not be graduating from there. Would that be attractive to a University?

And final question, as far as letters of recommendation, can a student at the University you’re applying to write you a letter? If I were to be accepted, the student would be Alum by the time I got there. If that were allowed, how good would it look?

If you’ve continued that same form of service into high school, then I would say count them. Otherwise, don’t. The quantity of hours isn’t that big of a deal, anyway. Having, say, 600 hours instead of 500 won’t make any difference.

If you haven’t done them yet, then don’t put them. If you just started them senior year, then I wouldn’t put them unless you put in a significant and consistent time commitment since joining. But last minute ECs like that might not look favorable anyway. They won’t be impressive or deal-breaking, anyway.

Probably not.

No. I’m taking this to mean that he/she is a junior this year, a senior the year of your acceptance, and would just have graduated when you’re a freshman? In any case, doesn’t matter much. Letters of rec should only come from guidance counselor, teachers, coaches, and a few other sorts of people in some circumstances (like if there was someone who you’d done a lot of an extracurricular under or something).
