What can help make up for a bad GPA?

Hi,

I’m in high school and seems like I’m going to end up with a unweighted GPA between 3.4-3.5 which is quite low. I’m trying to get into NC State, Elon, or UNC. What are things that can help make up for my low GPA? My ACT is 33 and my SAT is 1480. My AP exams are all 4s and 5s and the three subject tests I took I received a score of 780, 790, and 800.

Thanks

Your GPA is not life darkest moment, but not sufficient for elite schools. What about the UNCs at Wilmington and elsewhere in state. You may find yourself more competitive and valued at private and public schools that are not so high on themselves. You may even be a catch who gets money and you get a good education.

I presume you are in state? Nothing will make up for it, but your GPA is not terrible. And Elon also likes NC kids. Show them lots of love.

Lots of good, solid students like the OP reach for the elite schools. But consider that getting accepted to a premium may be worse than being rejected. Being surrounded by a classroom full of former high school valedictorians would be down right scary and self-confidence busting to boot. Like they say in horse racing, “run 'em where they can win”.

You need to find a school that matches your GPA/SAT, not just hope you will get in with those scores. go ahead an apply, but have safeties and matches.
