What can I do for a job?

What can I do for a job with computers? I’m going to be a senior in high school, but there’s no company that I know of for whom I can create a webpage. I’ve applied to local grocery stores, but I’ve never received a phone call/e-mail. So, any ideas?

Ok, I’m not sure what you’re saying as your post is unclear whether you are looking for just a job or a job dealing with computers.

If it is the later of the two, nothing. You’re in high school with no computer classes relevant to what a business would be looking for. They hirer professionals, not kids who want to make webpages.

If you are looking for just a job, what are we supposed to do? It’s your town and you should know who is hiring and who is not. If you simply filled an application out than you aren’t going to get hired. Get OFF the computer, put on slacks and a tie and go to different businesses and ask if they have openings.

[sarcasm]now there’s a winning attitude[/sarcasm]

Says the high school kid who thinks he is going to be hired to make webpages. Man if everyone was as talented as you we could eliminate CS degrees!

I just really, really hope you didnt fill out the application and under job applying for you put “web site designer”. If you did, and I was the manager, I would frame your application for a good laugh every morning.

To be fair, I had a few friends that made a bit of spare change designing webpages for local businesses while in high school in college. As long as you’ve got a solid portfolio it doesn’t matter if you’ve taken classes in computer architecture or not.

I have known those people too, but most I knew had connections to the business in some way.

Plus, judging from his post, I am guessing he has no portfolio.

Look on craigslist.org. You don’t even need to go to college!

A friend of mine spends his days in cafes, meets clients (Joe Blow who owns a small business) at said cafes, hits on girls in places with coffee and beer, and makes $50/hr or $500 flat rate for web design. BTW he uses templates so 90% of his work is done! He gets work off of craigslist or from word-of-mouth. Don’t waste your time in college if you have the skills right now.

I think its great that you are thinking outside of the box. I would start with your own web page and blog and use the rapidly growing facebook, twitter, etc. Maybe place an ad in your local church bulletin - there are many cottage industries that could use affordable web site design.

go to those design competition web pages, where people put up money for logo designs and then posters compete for the business. There are a number of them (99designs, designcontests.net) and from what I can tell the selections are really taste based. If you are a good designer this should prove it. Win some competitions, for about +$200 a piece, to develop a portfolio and then market yourself as a web page designer to local businesses.
