What can I do in Philadelphia during a 3 hour layover from 6 AM to 9:30?

Boarding is at 9:30; landing is at 6. I’ll be catching my next flight at the Philadelphia International Airport. Is there anything I can do to explore Philadelphia for an hour or two before heading back to the airport? I’m going alone (and no car), so suggestions must be within easy access. Thanks!

If your an American history guy, go see some sights! Philly is loaded with American history.

If not, grab some food and a magazine.

Could use some help here^^

Thanks, I posted in your thread. Interesting dilemma.

Have you been to Philly before, and are there specific places worth visiting?

I have been to Philly, pretty neat city.

There really isn’t anything really unique to do outside of sporting events (which probably won’t be scheduled for 6am) and history.

But yes, whether you are a history buff or not, the sites are probably worth seeing. They are pretty important.

I’d make a trip to Independence Hall or see the Liberty Bell.

Independence Hall sounds worthwhile. I’ll get directions from google later.

Via public transportation, Independence Hall is an hour away from the airport. Does anyone have suggestions for places that are closer?

How about the Tinicum wildlife preserve, which is directly next to the airport? Probably a $5 cab ride tops.

How about Tony Luke’s cheesesteaks or roast pork sandwiches for breakfast? They open at 6 am. The original South Philly location is not far from the airport.

Three hours is not enough time to go anywhere and safely get back for your flight. you would be traveling in the rush hour commute. Anyway, what would be open at 7am?

Exactly. OP - Do you really think you’re going to have enough time to leave the airport, commute to your point of interest, gain something meaningful from your time, AND make it back to the airport, this time going through security again? I personally would feel VERY uncomfortable doing so in a three-hour window.

Take a nap-in the airport. Get some breakfast. You won’t have time to do much else.

I travel through Philly airport all the time and am very familiar with it. There isn’t enough time for you to get out of the airport, see any sights and get back in time. It’s nonsensical to think that you can do so, and these suggestions of the Liberty Bell / Independence Hall are quite fanciful. If you were coming in at 6 am and leaving again at 9:30 pm, then you’d have a point.

You’re not going anywhere, so get to the nicest terminal (I think it’s the USAir one) and get a magazine.

I live there, you don’t have any time. The airport is about 40 minutes from the tourist-y attractions. You don’t really have time for anything at all. Just explore the airport, it isn’t a very nice one, but walking around them can be kind of fun.

Nothing. You don’t have time to leave. There is some good shopping in the airport, though.

^ Indeed. Be sure to visit the Philadelphia MarketPlace between Terminals B and C:

Here’s a directory of shops and food places at the airport (heaviest concentration between Terminals B and C):

Alright, thanks everyone. Will be staying in the airport!
