What can I match?

I am currently going to be a second year in UC Riverside and I’ve been thinking very highly on transferring. Here are my stats. I’m looking for a university with a great psychology program as well as a good biology/pre-med program

Major: Psychology/Pre-medicine
GPA: 3.9 (Mostly solid As, one A-, one B, one B+, and 3 A+'s)
Credits when applying: 117.5

here are my ECs

Pre-health professions mentor
Volunteer at a traumatic brain injury center

Noticeable good things:
I’ve never gotten below a 3.86 in college (the B- and A- was from high school when i took some CC courses)

LOR Relationships:

 • I had the same Chemistry professor for all 3 quarters, he knows me very personally
 • My major’s counselor is also my advisor for my honor society, she also knows me very well
 • Good relationship with my research professor, knows me personally

Heres my work experience
Worked at a water park the summer after senior year, currently working for the summer at the place i volunteer as a residential technician assisting doctors and therapists with brain injury patients

Okay (deep breath) here is my not so excellent high school record, I was one of those lazy honors/ap students =(

GPA: Weighted: 3.4, Unweighted 2.5-2.6 (not sure but in the mid 2 range)
SAT: 1180
SATII: Math Level 2 590
Writing 600
Noticeable ouches: D in PE freshman year, F in honors math analysis junior year 2nd semester, suspended in junior year for a prank at tennis practice (I can explain what happened on my app)

High school ECs: Key club (no position), JV Tennis (3 years), Trained in GIS to help a teacher out for his master’s thesis on water quality

What do you think are my safeties, matches, and reaches? Can I match into harvard, columbia, or stanford despite my crappy high school stats? How about tufts, nyu, and bu? Is there anything I can do to boost my stats even more?

whoops forgot to add some things

This will be what my courseload looks like after completing my 2nd year

AP Gov (didnt take it)
AP Econ (didnt take it)
AP Enviro sci (didnt take it)

you are at UCR, that’s a GREAT school, but if you want to transfer, why not UCLA or UCBerk.
a 3.9 is really impressive, why not try harvard =P
good luck :D

i’m not sure about “match”, but look into…

ucsd
ucla
u michigan
u chicago
johns hopkins
stanford
yale

This is my list of schools that I am going to apply, the thing is though transferring is not my number one priority, being that i am premed, medical school is my main goal, therefore my safeties are a little bit high, if it turns out that I only get into my safeties, I will stay at UC Riverside because I’ve already have things setup here and it would be alot easier for me to maintain my gpa for med school but anyways heres my list of schools

Safeties

UCSD
UCLA
CAL

Aiming for

Tufts
Boston U
NYU
Hopkins

Long shots

Harvard
Brown
Columbia
Stanford

based on my stats what schools do i have a very good chance for?

berkeley as a safety? that’s a bit presumptuous…

yes i know, but it makes no sense for me to transfer from UCR to UCI or UCSB or something if they offer relatively the same comparable programs… I want to transfer but that is not my highest priority as med school is the most important priority of mine

You need to retake the SATs for the ivies, it’ll still be uphill with 1 1400 plus. UC to UC transffers are hard, Cal and UCLA are not even close to safeties. I’d say BU is the only school that may be a match, but even there the SAT score may be an issue.

Your best bet may well be to continue to do great at UCR, ace the MCAT and head for a better school for med school.

thanks for all the comments guys, its really debatable as of now if i want to transfer or not, but i will go ahead and apply this fall/spring and decide later. Does anyone have any other comments on my chances for these schools? Greatly appreciated! Thanks!

i would say you have a shot at your top choices. i think you have a better chance at tufts, nyu, (i.e. what you’re aiming for), than you do at either ucb or ucla. uc-uc transfers are a bit difficult, due to the priority california community college transfers recieve. so don’t count on those schools to be too much of a safety.

it looks like you’re an active student at ucr, and have a very decent gpa. i think you have good chances.

<3,

Izzie Bear

thanks izzie, i really like Tufts, a premed that graduated there told me it had a great environment

does anyone know the pro and cons of going to Tufts for undergrad?

is that too many credits though for a transfer? you’re like 2.5 from graduation

It’s quarter credits (117.5/180)

ok(10 characters)

I thought I heard there is like a pre-med program (?) at UCR that guarantee transfer to the UCLA pre-med program if you are in the top 5% of the major or something like that… heard friends talkin about it.

yes but its really over-rated… theres too much of a premed hype here

its called the Thomas Haider program, they take 24 of the best UCR students in for their 4th year undergrad as their first year of med school… though UCLA is a great med school, I would really like to be open for more options in what i choose as my medical school when I am applying

I think you’re list looks good, but I strongly susgest you revise your saftey schools. Berkeley and UCLA are really never schools that should be included in the saftey catagory. If you want saftey schools consider UCSD (which I see you did) and maybe UCSB or UC Davis.
