So- I have carhartts and levis that I wear for work and school & I have evening * gowns* that I have collected over the years to wear to high end things- but I just received the instructions for attire to an event in a couple weeks and not only do I not have anything to wear for it- I don’t know what it means.

Business or evening casual?
I am not going to dig out a suit- from 20 years ago unless forced to- but what does evening casual mean?

crepe de chine skorts?

imo evening casual makes me think of those rayon type flowing pants and blouses- but they make me look like a * mom* and I am planning to talk to rockstars.
Hmm
WWCHD?
( what would Chrissie Hynde do?)

mafool, how did people interpret snappy casual? Just asked DH what he thinks it means, and he chuckled and said it is an outfit that I don’t wear. I asked if he had an outfit that he would wear that he identifies as “snappy casual”, and he said no!

To me evening casual would be a wrap dress of regular length and non-sparkle material or a nice pants suit… Either would get me most anywhere except a formal event.

well, it’s young office, northeastmom, so for many of the women, it meant spiffy jeans (some with bling), heels, and sparkly tops. Some of the more, ahem, mature women wore pants and luxurious tops (as in cashmere or silk)

well this is in Seattle on a friday night- so I will be cold and tired that is if you consider 40 deg on a January evening cold ;)

It is a casino night fundraiser for CCFA- with * gaming* and lt dinner & silent & live auction, but not a a fancy restaurant it will be in the * Great Hall* of the Naval reserve building- so Im thinking freezing.

I was gonna wear either a short black cocktail dress with a jacket- that I wore to the last school auction- the jacket is really cute it is a great red color that actually looks ok with my hair & it is vintage- I think 40s. but the cocktail dress has skinny rhinestone straps and is so slim fitting that I had to buy a half slip so the indentation of my navel didn’t show!

I do have a wool or silk black skirt but I really didn’t want to have to wear heels. I have awful feet- sexy shoes don’t work for me( I did find some skinny strap ones that went with the cocktail dress at the same vintage shop- but I had to take them off to run around)

oooh- perhaps this could be an excuse to get some Emma Peel black boots?
I do like heels- but my lil hobbit feet don’t present the image Im hoping for.:p

I like the skinny black pants and flowy cool looking wrap sort of blouse. Why wear something that you will be cold in all night? Whoever dictated that it was normal to wear summer strapless outfits for women in the winter was perverted. And stupid women shoes that you can’t do anything except stand around in…

I echo kathiep - and there are some really cute ballet flats available now if you don’t want to wear heels. I have a pair that are black leather with black patent cap toes. I wore them with a pair of black pants to a “business casual” New Year’s Eve party (with a sparkly sweater) and got lots of compliments.

Business casual is not a cocktail dress! Business casual is what you wear to work on Friday’s when you office allows. For men that means no tie or jacket; usually a polo shirt or casual button down or a sweater with a pair of khaki pants. For the women there usually isn’t much difference; slacks with a sweater, casual dress or skirt, or dark jeans.

I think for your event a pair of slacks with a nice sweater or a casual dress with a pair of boots would be great. I tend to wear great jeans in a dark color and dress up my jewelry for evening casual.

I vote for comfort and warmth! If you have a jacket that feels and looks good, put it with pants and flat shoes. Black pants (they don’t have to be dressy), t-shirt/shell/cami, ballet flats (I saw some great ones recently at Target, btw) and your jacket sound great to me. Black gets you most anywhere. Sounds like the vintage jacket can be dressed up or down and brings your personality into the mix, making you feel good…Casino nights require lots of movement - if you don’t wear heels regularly, you shouldn’t have to struggle with them on a night that supposed to be FUN!..As another option, there’s always crepe de chine skorts!!

I agree work with the vintage jacket. Casino night you are going to do some moving around so comfortable shoes is a must.
Where I live you could get away with the jacket with a tank underneath and either black pants with boots or even a nice pair of designer jeans with boots or even heels.
Another option is dark jeans or black pants with a shiny blouse.
Or if you can carry it off I had a friend wear recently black leggings, a long black sweater and black low heel boots. She had a red belt around her waist. She added a black cashmere wrap. And a large patent leather handbag.
I think at those events you find people dressed in all sorts of different ways. Some woman love a chance to wear something dressy.

The little black dress, street-length, no sparkly accessories. You can nver go wrong with the basic black dress. If you are not a dress person, then I recommend nice black slacks and a white/ivory blouse or dressy knit top (I like knits over blouses/shirts myself). Black leather shoes, neat black leather bag (should not look like a shopping tote).
I think sometimes I’m the queen of what-to-wear angst, and I know I’m not alone!
