What can we do instead of Affirmative Action?

Look, Ccers, all our debate about Affirmative Action is arguably a waste of time. I’m a black person, who is willing to put my feelings about affirmative action aside and ask a question that nobody seems to ask: What can we do instead of AA?
Rules

 1. State a plan
 2. state why it would work
 3. State pros and cons of said plan
 4. Back it up with statistics

So, CCers, unite, instead of complaining about AA, let’s figure out useful alternatives to AA.

I just read that 12,000 high schools produce a little over half of all the high school droputs in the nation. What can we do to preserve diversity without using affirmative action. Let’s come up with creative solutions and debate the value of each idea.

I’ll start first. A lot of people tout socioeconomic AA as a solution/alternative to AA. But i know there are problems with this.
Debate.

Just curious: What are the problems with socioeconomic AA? I’ve never heard them seriously discussed.

Socioeconomic AA won’t happen because colleges need wealthy students to pay the entire cost in order to help subsidize those who need aid (in addition to their endowments and donations and such).

UK style admissions.

This is pointless. AA is in place for a reason, because it’s fair. It doesn’t have to do with slavery or paying reparations or any of that bs. It’s because there are less African Americans who preform well academically in the country, and as a result, the ones who do will be rewarded for it. The point of affirmative action is to even out social races in terms of educational and economical opportunity.

If you keep denying a race admission to top colleges, based solely on academic accomplishments, that race will stay in the same position of society. The fact is, many minorities have not had as many privileges as others, and if their background is ignored, their race will be ignored, and they will never climb up the social ladder.

I am an AA URM, but come from an upper middle class family, and my parents are able to help me with homework, especially math. I have had as many privileges as everyone else in the country, but if I am acted upon favorably, then so be it. Not all African Americans are in the best of situations, and its only fair everyone gets an equal advantage.

You want to stop affirmative action? Give every household in the country equal income…

pch340, I understand how you feel about afirmative action. I am also black. But this is NOT A THREAD TO DEBATE THE MERITS/DRAWBACKS OF AA. I repeat NOT. (with all due respect, of course)
I want to hear REAL PLANS AND SOLUTIONS.
I would readily give up AA; if there were a better plan in place to help African Americans. I want to hear from detractors and supporters of AA what plans would be good alternative so we can be PROACTIVE instead of endlessly falling into race politics. I want solutions. I think that we, as black people, all have a vested interest in seeing if we can find a better plan to lift other AAs out of poverty. Less AAs in poverty = more strong families, more happinesss, and lots of cute black guys  (j/king lol)
If anyone has better alternative to AA, then I want to hear it.

So far I have seen

 1. socioeconomic AA
 2. UK style admissions

how would either help african americans? benefits and drawbacks of each plan? More detalis, please? Can anyone come up with more plans? discuss and debate.

UK style admissions: is it by stats only? That type of system would not preserve diversity, would it??? How much of a boost do UR’s get these days? Maybe the gap is narrowing??
Doesn’t the UK have a branched hugh school experience - one way to more vocational, the other to the more academic colleges and unis? Not sure if our HS system is comparable enough to theirs to really help us.

I do think it would be a good idea to re-define diversity.

To make sure privileged or unchallenged URM’s are not benefitting from the boost. And that those who have obstacles, whatever race, ethnicity, are recognized, too.

i am also all for limiting the number of total apps per student to limit the insane increases in selectivity, making it feel too much like a crap shoot. It will allow for a more thorough reading of apps, allow for even better self-selection. And better match to fit by AdComms. Might help with the AA situation, too.

In order to eliminate AA, we must start at the root: elementary school.

There are just so many cr

Rebuild the K-12 education system from the ground up. That is the only real way we can fix this problem.

Okay, david the fat.
But how do you propose to rebuild the system from the ground up?
What is your plan? Let’s get into specifics.

I support economic AA.

And, it’s not true that “full pay” students subsidize those that need aid. That’s a myth.

You’ll probably get the most cynical reactions from Asian Americans who (due to small numbers) are more likely to be the victims of hostile racial discrimination than the perpetrators, but who widely believe that university admissions committees practice affirmative action in favor of European Americans over Asian Americans simply because the latter are ORM at most well regarded universities.

In terms of the original question, anything that will actually make a big difference in solving the problem (e.g. “fix the K-12 schools”) is a very large problem in and of itself to tackle. All of the stuff done at the university admissions level just moves a few students to slightly “better” universities, while pushing a few students down to slightly “worse” universities, compared to what they would otherwise have attended. While a potentially large difference for each individual student, it is not a big change on a societal level.

See my post in the AA Thread in the african american section. I don’t feel like rewriting it. It should be on the last page

“You’ll probably get the most cynical reactions from Asian Americans who are more likely to be the victims of hostile racial discrimination than the perpetrators, but who widely believe that university admissions committees practice affirmative action in favor of European Americans over Asian Americans simply because the latter are ORM at most well regarded universities.”

That is exactly what is happening at my high school.

International Socialist Revolution and the establishment of World Communism.

Human rights, liberties, and equality are all advances; money would not be the same as it is now; humanity would own everything collectively; everyone would have everything needed to survive (feasible under current production rates given equal distribution; without production wasted on killing each other, it would be even better); as for college education, it would be free; classes would be abolished and equality fostered amongst all humans.

Pros: no more rich, no more poor, human race united. Cons: very hard to execute, possibility of dictators taking over before world system is consolidated.

The richest 1% of adults alone owned 40% of global assets in the year 2000, and that the richest 10% of adults accounted for 85% of the world total. The bottom half of the world adult population owned 1% of global wealth (stats courtesy of the United Nations). This distribution is self-perpetuating. With an equal distribution of wealth and abolition of socioeconomic classes, human existence would foster opportunity for all people.

Billy, I am not sure if you are serious but…

The black students need a stable family environment that they can count on every day of every year. They need a caring mother and father to teach them the value of a good education even if they (the parents) do not have a good education. The children of these parents need to excel and become educated and marry someone who is educated. Then these parents can not only teach the value of a good education, but can help teach the material as well. The children of these parents will be better educated than their ancestors and will begin to look for better schools and colleges. Several generations later, top 50 schools are being attended by their great, great grandchildren…full pay.
The black child needs a loving dedicated father and a loving dedicated mother every generation. They need a secure, safe and stable home. Children need structure that they become accustom to and count on to remain unchanged. This environment provides optimum study time where the child’s mind is free from major stress that a lack of all the above creates. Under these conditions children of any race will thrive. There are far to many black students without the advantage of both a mother and father in the home. That appears to be the #1 problem facing blacks today. I also believe it shows academically.

David, thank you, I enjoyed the video.

Socioeconomic AA please, so that more poor Asian kids like me can have their hard work rewarded.

bump.
