What can you tell me about pursuing teacher credentialing in the state of California w/minimal debt?

I’m doing a little research on behalf of my son, 25 yo, received his Bachelors in English 3 years ago. We’re in the Orange County/Los Angeles area, so CSUF would be one of the options he’d likely be looking at.

He’s currently living in Texas, but wants to eventually end up back in California.

How long has your son been living in Texas?

It’s very possible that he would NOT be eligible for instate costs to attend college in CA if he is now a resident of Texas.

Cal State Northridge has a great program.

He spent approximately 4 months in Texas, then 2 months in Idaho, one year in California, one year in Texas, minus coming back to California for the summers.

He’d turned in his California I.D. for a Texas DL about 1 1/2 years ago…

@“Irene Joy” if he has all Texas IDs and the like…and has had them for 1 1/2 years…and resides in Texas…he likely is no longer a CA resident for tuition purposes.

Has he considered getting teacher certification in Texas? Then working there to get some teaching experience…and THEN moving back to CA?

He is considering that also. He’s actually been teaching for 3 semesters now in Texas at a classical private Christian college prep school - though not with a credential. Would you happen to know how transferring a teacher certification from another state to California would work?

I honestly don’t know…but teachers from other states DO relocate to CA, and they somehow get their teaching certification and credential.

I would suggest your son look on the CA State Department of Education website…and see what he would need to do to become credentialed and certified in CA if he was relocating from elsewhere.

Great idea; thanks!
