What classes do top schools look for on transcripts ???

I was just wondering. Normally I am told competitive schools normally look for classes like Calculus (especially for a science major) and 4 years of a language. But I want a second third or fourth opinion. Also, does it hurt a student if they have not taken those classes.

Yeah, I think those are pretty typical inclusions on a top applicant’s transcript, though I wouldn’t say it actively hurts a student if they don’t have those classes as long as they have a rigorous program

Go to the collegeboard website (the people who make the SAT test) and check out their big future college search feature. It tells you the recommended and required classes for each school and you can reference what you are taking.

I would try to ask some students from your target college

In my discussions with college admissions officers, it is most important to see that you have challenged yourself to the extent that options to do so were available to you. Calculus is good but not everyone gets that far. APs are important but beware strong schools know which APs are not quite so challenging so dont feel just because it is an AP, you have it made. Take the toughest course load that you can successfully handle (more As than Bs).

Thanks for the advice guys , I’ll talk more with my counselor and see what she thinks.

Competitive schools look for competitive applicants. If you’re not taking the most rigorous courseload available, you’ll be less competitive than some students in your very high school.

Not that you need to have every sgl AP class – but you should aim have near full capacity - b/c you’re vying w/other students who are packing (and acing) those classes.
