My 11th grader is interested in applying to McGill next year. She has straight A’s this year apart from French, where she is struggling with the teacher. She just received a gold medal in the Grand Concours national French contest (one of the top scorers in the state) yet her grade in French is very low. It is having an impact on her GPA, and we are concerned it will hurt her chances at McGill. I assume McGill includes French grades in their GPA calculation. Do they also include subjects such as art (her A’s in art could mitigate the French grade, for example)?
I do not know for sure which courses are counted in the overall GPA.
Regardless, I would suggest looking here at the historical cutoff levels:
They look at a few different things
- Overall GPA
- Grades in each prerequisite course
- SAT / ACT if submitted
The prerequisite courses are listed for each type of degree. For example the B.A. & Sc. has prerequisites listed as “English, pre-calculus, and two of biology, chemistry or physics,” and last year’s cutoff was 3.7 unweighted average in grades 11 and 12, A- in each prerequisite course, and 700+ on each part of the SAT.
In any case, it’s easy enough to apply (no essays, mainly just enter courses and grades into the application) and she can apply to as many degree programs as she likes. The first application allows her to select two degree programs, but if there are more programs that might interest her, she can then add another application to select two more.
I cannot answer your question, but am curious about the situation quoted above. To what do you/your daughter attribute this discrepancy ?
It’s tough to know why. I think she’ll hit all the other requirements, but GPA is the question mark right now
