I am an incoming junior and I am enrolled in a program called Running Start that allows you to enroll full-time at a local community college while simultaneously earning high school and college credit. The college is on a quarter system, and I am allotted 15 credits tuition-free per quarter, which amounts to about 3 classes per quarter. For reference, I live in Washington.

I have it planned so that I can earn my AA before I graduate, but in doing so, I will not be taking some of the classes top universities recommend. I have a few schools in mind: Columbia, Berkeley, Johns Hopkins, MIT, CalTech, Stanford, Harvard, UW Madison, UW Seattle, U Penn, UCLA, University of Chicago, WUSTL, Princeton, Yale, Cornell, Duke, UCSD, UCD, and UM Ann Arbor. Mostly the reputable undergraduate biology programs.

So, here’s what I have planned for my first year of classes:

Fall 2013
Calculus 1
Psychology
English Composition

Winter 2014
Calculus 2
US History 1
English Lit

Spring 2014
Statistics or Calculus 3
US History 2
French 3

Note: Each class is worth 1 full year of high school credit, except for English and History, which are considered 1/2 year each. Hence the two of each.

Second Year of Classes

Fall 2014
Chemistry 1
Biology 1
English Composition

Winter 2015
Chemistry 2
Biology 2
English Lit

Spring 2015
Chemistry 3
Biology 3
American Government

My main concern is the lack of a fourth year of foreign language, and whether or not Psychology will account for a fourth year of social studies. I’m pretty sure it will, so I really just need to find a way to fit French 4 in there.

Here are the classes I took the first two years in high school:

Freshman

Semester 1
English 1 Honors
Family Health
Algebra 2 Trig Honors
Nutrition 1
French 1
Coordinated Science Honors

Semester 2
English 1 Honors
Algebra 2 Trig Honors
French 1
Coordinated Science Honors
Intro Art
PE 1

Sophomore

Semester 1
Floriculture
English 2 Honors
Biology Honors
Precalculus
AP World History
French 2

Semester 2
Aerobics
English 2 Honors
Biology Honors
Precalculus
AP World History
French 2

I also took Algebra 1 in 7th grade and Geometry in 8th grade.

So, tallies of academic classes thus far

English- 2 years
Science- 2 years
Math- 4 years
Social Studies- 1 year
Foreign Language- 2 years
Academic Electives- 0 years

Tallies of academic classes after my 2 years at the community college

English- 4 “years”
Science- 8 “years”
Math- 7 “years”
Social Studies- 4 “years”
Foreign Language- 3 “years”
Academic Electives- Anything above 4 years I think, so 7 “years”

What do you think? Is there any way I can improve my plan? I’m planning on majoring in Biology and then going to medical school.

Thank you,
Logan
