Quick question. Let’s say we’re taking four classes… which two should we sign up for during Telebears Phase I at CalSO? What should we prioritize on the basis of?
In my case I’m taking Math 53, Philo 6, Physics 7A and CS 61A (for which I have heard good things about Hutchings, Dreyfus, Zettl, and Harvey, respectively). If I want to ensure that I get most or all of my choices for class and teacher (and perhaps time slot as well) which should I try and register for in Phase I?

Sign up for Math 53 with Hutchings for sure because that will fill you the quickest. Right now, CS 61A is about 1/8 full, so you can wait on that. If you are an engineer sign up for Physics 7A with Zettl since you can wait on taking Dreyfus until later if you can’t take his class this semester. For engineers technical classes are more important than breadth classes like Philo 6.

should we wait for physics 7a in the spring? the berkeley engineering handbook thing, or some document they sent us, had an undergrad course thing to follow & they put it for spring. they put E10 for fall

if you don’t have credit for 1b, there will be nothing to stop you from signing up for 53, however it is highly not recommended, as you will have to take 1b in some way or form eventually. i’m not sure if they give you a less amount of credit if you take 53 first and then go backwards to 1b. i know they do it if you take math 1a and then math 16b (in which case you get only 2 units for a 3 unit class), but it doesn’t really make sense to do the same for the 53-then-1b ordering.

are you sure? because it says that 1b is a prerequisite for 53 on schedule.berkeley.edu. idk im just an incoming freshman, maybe cal is weird. but at every other school i know of, you would have to take calculus 2 before taking multidimensional…it makes sense this way.

You’re supposed to take 1B before 53, but the online class registration system won’t stop you from enrolling in 53 if you don’t have 1B. However, you’ll need to make up 1B some time in the future.
