What college did the most prestigious PERSON you know go to?

I don’t know how to judge what people I know are most prestigious or even richest or smartest (I just don’t categorize people I know that way.)

Yes, most of us don’t put our friends or relatives into categories or count their money.

I picked mine because Time Magazine had him on their 100 Most Influential People in the world in 2013. I don’t know anyone else personally who has made that list so who am I to argue.

Smartest: University of Michigan
Richest: Wayne State

(Only posting because of the Wayne State references. Haven’t lived in MI for almost 30 years but the Wayne grad is still the richest person I know.)

@carachel2 I had never head of Stephen F Austin until this year, during March Madness.

Most prestigious (incredibly smart, well respected, liked by her peers and her subordinates): University of Western Australia

Richest: My uncle, college drop out. Started his own woodwork business and now is by far the richest person in the family.

Thanks to the Wonderful World of Google, I found out that Sam Walton went to the University of Missouri at Columbia, Warren Buffett started at the Wharton School of Business before finishing his degree at the University of Nebraska (and interestingly enough was rejected by Harvard Business School), and Charles and David Koch both went to MIT.

Nowhere. Built his own company from the ground up. You can be sure, however, that his teacher wife sent the kids to college!

Wealthiest: Pitt
Most successful peer: William & Mary
Smartest: McGill

UT-Austin.

Smartest person I’ve met: University of Puerto Rico, PhD at UChicago
Richest: Cornell, PhD at MIT

I met Jimmy Carter in 1979 - he went to the Naval Academy.

I’m with @PurpleTitan.

I don’t really know who the “smartest” person is among my friends and family. (well, there are a few incredibly talented people but the point is, there are a few, not just one). One friend who has led a fascinating life and done interesting research went to Cornell. Another noted researcher went to Harvard. Most political influence - MIT. Most famous/influential Hollywood producer - Brandeis.

I don’t think going to an Ivy guarantees or is even necessary for success, be it financial, political, prestige. This is just how things ended up among people I know. I met the first person in graduate school. I knew the last three people (or their younger siblings) in junior high/high school.

I can’t even begin to say who the wealthiest person is. I haven’t a clue what my friends (or family) earn.

First is social acquaintance, second is relation, third is close friend.

Prestigious: No college - renowned musician
Richest: High school dropout
Smartest: UC Berkeley - graduated mid 70s. Naturally brilliant and still maintains a joy and curiosity about the world around him. He freely admits that his high school grades and test scores wouldn’t get him into any UC today.

OP - Thanks for asking this! It never occurred to me that these people probably had a good, stabilizing influence on my kid’s approach to the college search.

My friend. 27 years old. Software Engineer, undergrad at Stanford

Wealthiest-Internationally known singer/actor/social justice activist HS dropout, military service
Smartest-three people-University of Washington, Oregon State University, Elmira College
Wealthiest/smartest locally-Monmouth University
Most political movers and shakers in both parties locally, county and state level-University of WA

Wealthiest - University of Arkansas
Smartest - Arkansas State University (undergrad), London School of Economics (master’s degree), Harvard Law

Most publicly well-known people I know: University of Wisconsin, University of North Texas, Occidental College. Most financially sucessful: UCLA.

Mayor of our town - Harvard.
Governor of Massachusetts - Harvard
Yo Yo Ma - Harvard (met him while I was a student, not a friend though)

Oh and the richest went to Harvard too. Met him at a pre-reunion event. For a while he was on Forbes top 10 richest list.

Smartest person I know -
undergrad - Oxford, PhD Caltech
He’s a member of the Academy of Sciences and plays a mean bluegrass Banjo too.

One person sticks out. He attended his local community college and graduated from SF State. From there he got his PhD at Stanford. He’s an international expert in his field, has spoken at United Nations meetings, published books.

UCSD for both smartest and wealthiest.

Most successful . . . **Community College (Associate’s).
