Hello I am searching for colleges. I am currently attending a Catholic college prep high school. I currently have a 32 ACT (33E, 31M, 35R, 27S, 7 Writing). I have played sports all through my high school years and am going to be playing three varsity sports this year. My senior course load is AP Calc BC, Psych Realism, AP Psych, AP Spanish, Chorus, American Gov, and Peace and Justice (religion). For extracurriculars I have over 200 hours of service hours. Most importantly, I helped found a free baseball camp for inner-city children who can’t afford it and put in over 70 hours. It has been recognized by my school, San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics, and many local media sources. I am looking for bigger name colleges with D1 sports teams. I’m interested in schools located in California and the East Coast.
So, what colleges would you recommend for me? (slight stretches, reasonable, and safeties) Thank you.
Unless you are interested in schools that are known primarily for their sports programs, Colgate (a high match) would meet your criteria as you have outlined them here.
Lots of colleges are realistic for you, so many that additional info would be helpful. What are you planning to study? Are you relying on merit or need based financial aid? Do you prefer big or small schools? Urban or more rural? Are you hoping to play a sport at a D1 school? You sound like a very hardworking student with terrific accomplishments!
I’m planning to study something related to business, most likely econ or finance. I’m looking for a bigger more well known school. I am not planning on playing a sport. Instead, I just want to spectate.
USC, UCLA, Cal Berkeley, UVA, Georgetown, Penn meet your criteria and would be stretches/reasonable. Stanford would be a big stretch.
Even with a 3.8 weighted GPA? My counselor is telling me that those schools are basically an unobtainable.
Rutgers, UConn, BU, Syracuse.
You can most likely do better than the one above my post. If you want to continue with Catholic schools with good business programs and big sports, look into Villanova and Boston College as matches, and look into Notre Dame as a reach.
What is your unweighted GPA?
Cal State Fresno, Cal State Sacramento, San Diego State, San Jose State, University of San Diego
Freshman admit rates (2016) for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19;
UCB: 14%
UCLA: 14%
UCSD: 44%
UCSB: 54%
UCD: 58%
UCI: 65%
UCSC: 85%
UCR: 94%
UCM: 96%
UCI and UCR have great Business schools and definitely within reach.
Not on the coast, but Creighton has good D1 athletics (but not football), good business school and program and Jesuit education. Should be able to get merit aid there as well.
Good luck!
Acceptance into business majors is VERY competitive, even for kids like you with good stats. Go for a few reaches (for example, Villanova if you like basketball, BC if you like football, Northeastern if you like hockey). Lafayette and Lehigh both have good econ/business programs and are D1 schools with a lot of school spirit. Maryland College Park also comes to mind, but I’ve heard football isn’t well attended there. USC (Southern California) has amazing school spirit, but it has a low acceptance rate so it would be a reach. Still, if you love it, apply.
Do your research and work with your guidance counselor to develop a list of target and safety schools. Florida State or Clemson, perhaps? Washington State or Oregon? Think about more than just D1 sports in making your decision. Consider whether you prefer an urban or rural location, the type of weather you can live with, Greek involvement, and any other characteristic that might be important to you. Schools are not all the same!! If you are going to need merit or need-based financial aid will also be critical.
@collegesearchz It would help to know your UW GPA since that is what most colleges look at first. With an ACT of 32 and a UC gpa of 4.0 you’ll have some very decent choices, but your GC is likely correct that your UW GPA maybe be too low to consider some of the top schools as realistic choices.
Also, can you afford to attend privates or full-pay OOS?
sounds like me in high school i ended up at smu and have enjoyed it - food for thought.
My unweighted gpa is around a 3.6. My freshmen year I had a 3.0 both semesters. My average gpa for sophomore and junior year is about a 4. This last semester I am aiming at a 4.5. I can afford any school. I would love to go to a big name uc but do not know how reasonable that is.
Just because a school doesnt have a big sports system would not steer me away from it. I’m looking for Greek life and a large social scene.
