I don’t want to solely rely on my counciler’s recomendations, so i’m asking here. What Texas colleges would I have a good chance of getting into?

GPA: 3.2 (unweighted) (barely top %50)
SAT: 1430
700 M
730 CR
EC:
Computer Club
Computer Science UIL

I’m going to be majoring in CS, my gpa is pretty bad, but i’m hoping that won’t hold me back too much.

Only 1 Ap test (CS A) - which I got a 5 on.

Currently have an internship with a medium-sized networking company. Have several IT certifications, including CCNA. (If anyone here even knows what that is)

I was thinking UTD, SMU, or A&M. What would my chances be of getting into those? (Is Rice even worth applying to?)

Most of your public schools in Texas will be in range save UT Austin. You can apply to Rice, but realize with your poor GPA and few ECs, it will be a long shot. If you really want to stay in Texas, you pretty much have your list. What’s your race and how competitive is your school?

I’m white. (didn’t know that race applied)

Pretty competitive Plano school.

But on the schools I mentioned (besides Rice), are my chances pretty good? Do I need to add a safety school to that list?

I estimate your chances at the Texas schools approximately as follows:

UTD–80%
Texas A&M–60%
SMU–55%
Rice–35%

Your great test scores offset the slightly less stellar GPA.

Oh, and the CCNA certification and the networking job help you out quite a bit in my view–especially if you apply as a computer science/IT major.

On a side note, if money is not a big concern, you would have an excellent chance at UCI or UCSB if you applied as an OOS student using test scores only (note that you would need a good writing score on the SAT and also need to take two other SAT IIs and get good scores). However, be aware that the UCs are extremely expensive from OOS.

Here’s the link for info on that if you care:
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/undergrad_adm/paths_to_adm/freshman/exam_eligibility.html

UCI has one of the top CS programs in the country.

Another school you could consider OOS is Indiana University–which has an IT program inside their excellent business school–and a separate IT program outside of it. If you apply early, you could probably get a $4,000 to $7,000/year scholarship–although you would still have a pretty high college bill there also. But your scores and GPA would get you in there easily.

P.S. I have certifications as a CISA and CISSP (IT Audit certs), as well as my CPA, PMP, and ISCFE (computer forensics) certifications/licenses. So yes, there are people on here that know what CCNA is. On a side note, one of the people on here I talk to all the time is a top lawyer in NYC–so there are real top graduates as well as top students on this site.

Thanks for great reply, I didn’t think that someone as old as yourself would be browsing these forums. (Assuming your 30+ because of CISSP)

Alright, one more question, how much attention does SMU and UTD pay to alum, considering my parents went to each of those schools, would my parents being alum increase my chances significantly?
