@pdvxpz20 Austin College (which is actually outside of Dallas, and NOT in Austin, TX) is a great small LAC. Only 1500 students and very tight open community, that encourages study abroad, and working directly with professors.
It is not hippy, but that said, is much more liberal that most of Texas.
It is fairly selective though, so you may want to work on SAT score to ensure consideration and/or tuition merit aid.
Without aid, it is quite expensive, like most private LACs.
Yes, the problem with a lot of LACs is that if you receive no aid, you’re probably looking at 50-60k a year, all in. Please have a conversation with your mom about what can actually be spent on your education.
Your grades are good. You seem thoughtful and intelligent. Why don’t you want to prep for a test? If you get a good score, you could be opening yourself up to a LOT more opportunities and potential merit scholarships. You can do Khan Academy free, the tests are free to print on College Board. You can also try the ACT, which is more fast paced, but also more straightforward.
I know the uncertainty about your father must be hard to bear at times, but no matter if he’s alive or not, he would surely want to see you do your best to work towards your future. And no doubt your mom would like the same. Whatever your dad has gone through, none of that is your fault. You can’t fix others. Don’t deprive yourself of potential opportunities. Do your best for yourself because it will make you feel better.
