What countries have Liberal Education?

Hey everyone,

So undergraduate colleges in the US have the liberal education system, where all students take a literature, math, science, social studies, arts, and world language class no matter what their major is. For example, if I major at some US college in Marine Biology, I still could take Mandarin and Psychology as well. Canada has the same system as well. I believe the UK doesn’t.

Now, my question is which other countries have this type of tertiary education system? I am a US citizen, but I spent half of my life abroad, so I really don’t feel the need to exclusively limit my college search to the US. I’m going to be an undergrad in the fall of 2017 and I’m looking everywhere (and I mean everywhere) for colleges as long as classes are taught in English. For instance, I came across the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, and I want to know whether I will still be able to take a variety of classes like I can in the US.

Thanks!!!

Your initial thesis is incorrect. Many colleges and universities do not require all students to “take a literature, math, science, social studies, arts, and world language class no matter what their major is.” There are some with much more open curricula.

A better question would be: Which countries allow for electives within the course of study? Many US schools do not have significant (or any) distribution requirements, but nearly all do allow for study outside the chosen major or concentration. This sounds more like what you are actually interested in: “I want to know whether I will still be able to take a variety of classes like I can in the US.”

Yep: our universities and colleges tend to want undergrads to benefit from a reasonably well-rounded education; IE, breadth of knowledge.

(Some) other countries seem to allow only for depth in a specific course of study/major.

@DreamSchlDropout Thank you so much, you rephrased it exactly the way I wanted!

Updated Question:

In what countries will I still be able to take a variety of classes like I can in the US?

Scotland is one country that does all courses outside the major.
