<p>I don’t know if I want to apply to JHU or not, but my essay is not the likes of anything JHU has ever seen before. =)</p>
<p>Maybe I’ll post it if I get in or decide not to go for it.</p>
<p>i lived in china for ten years, and still consider it my home. 10 dollars is like 80 yuen, so i wrote about going to the great wall with my cousins, learning about chinese history and my heritage, and also reliving childhood memories and spending time with people i love. :)</p>
<p>I created an elaborate 10 page (front and back) scrapbook/storybook.</p>
<p>getting a foot massage w/ a friend.</p>
<p>ordered some items off the mcdonalds dollar menu</p>
<p>I used the 10 dollars for the entry fee in a 5k race…</p>
<p>ohh that’s a good one…</p>
<p>I mentioned my intern at the JHH, bringing a friend who’s currently a BME at JHU (who in real life i promised to take with me - if I got in =P - to JHH introduce him to some ppl and have him help us out - if authorities let him =] ), so yeah, wrote about that day and spent $10 our lunch in cafeteria =D</p>
<p>I’m doing a collage of photographs (RD). I’m still in the beginning stages of the project, no concrete ideas yet :(</p>
<p>Went to the airport with my three year old sister.</p>
<p>It was cool because I was having a hard time writing my essay and then I actually went to the airport with my three year old sis and had a blast. Then I came home and dished out my essay in about 45 minutes. It was fun.</p>
<p>mine wasn’t particularly daring, but i think it was really well written and expressed who i am. it was about how my friends and i went downtown with the intention of going to south street but then ended up in the historic district instead etc etc.</p>
<p>well heres my essay… its not that good but i’ve done the best i can… so here it is =)</p>
<p>If you could plan a day’s adventure - starting from your home and spending only around $10 - where would you go, what would you do, and whom would you take with you?</p>
<pre><code> I have always wanted to capture a day. To hold it in my arms, embrace it, and enjoy what I have before it is gone. By putting all obligations aside, I would choose to visit the scenes of my past perhaps as a medium to seek closure before I moved on to the future. It is during spring break sapphire blue sky, crisp cool air, and emotionless banana trees bowing their majestic leaves to the cleansing breeze. A ten-dollar bill, which is equivalent to 400 bath in Thai, is all I need in an attempt to hire a mahout and feed the elephant as my transportation.
My first stop is around two kilometers away. As I begin to approach the familiar-looking building, I notice the old wooden shingles clinged by the maroon brick walls. This is the house we rented a couple of years ago and in a way, it symbolizes my family perhaps not a mansion, perhaps not much difference from any other architecture, yet stable and full of warmth. The only change in ten years is the tremendous height gained by the banana tree we planted in the backyard during my 6th birthday. Its broad green leaves reach out beyond the rusted fence. But everything else is exactly how we left it. After renting the brick house for almost a year, my family bought a larger house several miles away hence, my next destination. Like the banana tree, the mango trees tiny branches sway gracefully, brushing one another. Riding on the elephant further, I pass the public tennis court where I used to hit volley-shots with my brother everyday after school. The elephant finally stops in front of the cream, concrete building with tiled roof. I decide to enter the house and in it, I see my childhood memories posted on the walls in photographs, tracing me back to my root . . . and in a flash, I open my eyes in which I am back to the present.
Spending 10 dollars or 400 bath on the elephant and its mahout as a transportation for my drive back to my childhood is the most efficient way to initiate an adventure. Tracing back my roots from looking at the photographs reminds me of my past that is still buried deep down in my heart despite the fact that I am moving into the future. After imagining the sites I have seen on this day, I cannot help but notice the symbolism behind it all. All the houses and all the objects represent pieces of the jigsaw of my past, which gradually merge themselves into one whole picture a picture of me in the future.
