What did you learn today?

D and H love their androids. They aren’t interested in switching. They hate the bloatware. I’m just happy my sibs & I can share messages & photos in iphone.

I never thought to wonder what kind of phone anyone is using. It’s never made any difference as far as I can tell.

In Europe, and in the rest of the world, Android has a larger market share, something like 70%+. It’s only in the US that iPhones dominate.

If you use WhatsApp, it makes no difference what phone the people you’re communicating with have. It offers a superior messaging system (compared to iMessage), and its video and audio calling work wonderfully.

There is a really fun interactive app to use with the grandkids. I’ll pm you so it doesn’t look like marketing. I have zero ski. In the game (although I accidentally stumbled into getting to know the developer before she sold it to Mattel). My grandkids love it aa do my kids b/c we can spend a lot of time on it together and on occasion it can serve as a brief long distance babysitter if parents need to step away briefly.

I have an android; S1 and DIL have iphones. I find that when they send me photos, I can see them on my phone fine, but if I send the pix to my email so I can save them on my computer, they don’t come through. Does anyone have a solution??

Several options! Do you copy paste the photos to your email or Do you forward them? To me the easiest thing to do is have Google Photos and then just hit the little down arrow next to the picture - it downloads to your photos and they’ll be available both on your phone and on your computer where you should also have Google photos with Gmail.

I have an iPhone so I’m just going to assume that this works on android

I use the phonelink app on Pixel and HP laptop to text from laptop, see, save, copy-paste pix from phone, read transcripts of voicemails, etc. I can also make calls from laptop although I haven’t done that.

Last night I learned that when you sleep in the spring with the window open, and can’t sleep all night, the birds start chirping very early (way before sunrise).

The birds start about 2:45 am here in the heartland. I know this because that’s when I go to bed.

There are six state capitals west of Los Angeles.

I learned today and for the last few weeks that dealing with probate issues is complicated, even if you have a will. I also learned that a paralegal’s billable hours are much lower than the attorney for whom she/he works.

That’s very good to remember to try and see if you can utilize the paralegal.

I learned that I should check my weather app in the morning rather than at night. I dressed for it to be in the 80s today and it was cold and rainy.

I learned that you don’t have to be a senior for SilverSneakers/ActiveRenew/One pass. I did know that those fitness classes are only free to 65+ medicare folks, via selected supplemental plans (including AAPR/UHC, very big in our area). And I did know that 55+ folks like me could pay for those classes. But on a tour at our rec center today I learned that those classes cater to anybody who has needs the less intense options. They get a lot of younger people who have mobility limitations or are recovering from injury.

I also learned that those SilverSneakers classes always have a chair for each participant.

Dishwasher common (EASY to fix) problem is stuck float switch (see photos). Thank you Google! We knew based on the dirty dishes at end of cycle, despite open detergent dispenser, that there was some TBD problem with water supply. Since it is our original/1993 beloved dishwasher, there was a decent chance of a broken part. But yay… just pushing it back down fixed the issue. I assume the float switch prevents overfill when there is a drain problem.

Today I learned that “astroturfing” means faking a grassroots movement of some sort – could be in politics, could be just to sell a product.

The other day I learned that the bicycle was invented in response to the volcanic eruption of Mount Tambora and the year without a summer. This is a fascinating short article: How the Bicycle Was Born: Mount Tambora, the Year Without a Summer, and the Stubborn Courage to Reimagine the Possible – The Marginalian

Windows 11 (and probably other versions) can have multiple desktops. These are separate fullscreen views so you can be doing work in one and something completely different in another. It’s like having multiple monitors on your desk. I’ve found that if I open too many applications in the single window I had been using up to now it was a pain to try and keep them all visible, this solves that issue by doing unrelated tasks in different windows.

Here is an intro: https://www.pcworld.com/article/2940362/windows-11s-multiple-desktops-saved-my-sanity-even-when-i-missed-one-big-feature.html
